    Malawi Biotope, build log

hi, I'm in Shanghai, China, and i'd like a Lake Malawi biotope tank filled with mbuna as a gift for my Brother. He's coming back in 3 weeks, so time is short! Key things: i'd like it to be as close to the natural environment in Lake Malawi as possible, biotope. That is of course impossible...

    Lake Malawi tank

hi, i need some advice about aqua-scaping a tank for lake Malawi cichlids. I'm big into biotopes, but here is what I have so far in the photo attatched. I don't know what kind of stone it is, anyone know? Can't really find granite here, i live in Shanghai China. Also i'm not sure about the...

    amazon river biotope

hi, i'm going to make a 40g amazon river biotope tank. So far I only have the tank (90cm x 40 x 40). Today I traveled 30km each way to an actual factory (where they make the tanks) to pick one up. The build quality is flawless, although I was a big disappointed to find several tiny air bubbles...

    tiny air bubbles inside glass

hey, got a new 90*40*40 fish tank, after looking at it at home under bright light, noticed about 5 tiny air bubbles, about 1/4mm in diameter that are trapped inside the 10mm glass. Has it on both of the main facades. Quite visible under bright light. Is that an issue, structural integrity...

    My tank is now chernobyl

I had a healthy tank, 15 cardinal tetras, 4 siamese algae eaters, and around 10 shrimp of different variaties. Yesterday I swapped out my eheim classic green tubing for some clear tubing (it was advertised as PVC and aqaurium safe). Skip forward 12 hours, the lights come on and the shrimp are...

new pvc 12/16 piping has strong plastizer smell

hey, i replaced the green tubing of my eheim classic (was getting very gunked up on the inner walls) with a clear tubing of the same size made out of PVC. The PVC has a strong plastic smell. The shop I bought it from said safe for aquarium use, but I'm asking here to be sure. I have some...

Algae suddenly growing on the plants

hi, my diy co2 was pretty much off for a couple of days, and a thick hair like algae started to smother the hair grass in my tank. Even the saimese algae eaters couldn't get rid of it. I used my fingers to pull it off, and out of the tank it looks like a very strong, darkish green type of...

    Two weeks with new plants

This is just a side by side pic, two weeks ago i put some plants in. Going ok? Only change I made is, 4 days ago I added an extra t5 bulb, so there are now 3 24w T5HO bulbs.

    Is this shaping up ok?

Hey, first iwagumi style tank. I have ADA soil, DIY Co2 (1 bubble per second) and add liquid ferts. Lights are not that bright, two t5 24w bulbs, i calculated just a tad over 2wpg. I could add a third 24w bulb to the light fixture (one broke) but i'm having trouble finding a replacement. The...

rock placement: first iwagumi style tank

hey, my first attempt at an iwagumi style tank. The plants i'm not happy with, will replace with something else. But does this seem like a decent rock placement? The tank is 60cm X 30cm x 35cm. I tried to follow the 'basic' rules of iwagumi style by having an odd number of rocks, one big one...

    Help ID these three plants

hey, I failed at growing plants from seed (algae covered them and they died off), so i'm going to buy grown plants. But I have no way of identifying them as the website is in chinese. There's three i'm interested in: 1 2 3 Apologies for posting links, but each of those pages has several...

    Is this dwarf hair grass?

Pic taken shows the grass after it's been in the tank around 4 days, it keeps growing taller and taller. I'm not sure if it's dwarf hair grass or something else. Any ideas? The tanks is 35cm in height. Plants were grown from seed outside the tank then planted after two weeks underwater.

    55Wx2 PL lamp or 24Wx3 T5 lamp?

Hi, my new tank is 60cm x 30cm x 35cm (height) (16.6 us gallons). I'm not sure if I should use a 55Wx2 PL lighting fixture (releases 110W) or a 24Wx3 T5 lamp fixure (3 t5 bulbs producing 72W in total). Any idea which is better? The PL option seems a bit bright. Both use the same ballast. Thanks!

    DIY CO2 setup

Here it is: Works great, baking soda in one bottle, citric acid in the other, connected to a solenoid and then into the tank. I wanted a DIY CO2 system that can be used with a solenoid. When the solenoid is closed at night, the pressure builds in the bottle until 3.6kg/cm2, then a safety valve...

Is this a good DIY co2 system?

hey, found a DIY Co2 'kit' for sale online, but I know next to nothing on this subject. I've attached some pics of it. It's two bottles, a pressure gauge, that thing with the red cap on it is supposedly some kind of 'safety valve', and some tubing. That attaches to what looks like a bubble...

    some advice on aquascaping?

Here's the tank (my first one) and some rocks i have to work with, plus two pieces of driftwood. Tank dimensions make it kind of 'nano' its only about 58cm x 24cm x24cm. I'm not sure how to make it all 'coalesce' together so it looks like a natural habitat, like an amazon river or something...

    Nitrogen cycle?

Nitrogen cycle and how can I get my water optimum. Hi, My tank situation: Basically my new 10 gallon tank was cleaned out and filled with bottled mineral water, brought up to temperature (26c) and a new very small wattage (200L/h) filter was added. The filter was extremely cheap, and I...

    This c02 setup decent?

hey, have a small 10 gallon tank, don't know anything about co2 injection, but would the system shown in the pic attatched be decent? It says it provides co2 dosage adjustment, the tank is '95g, 4000psi' and it has a '3 in 1' co2 diffuser. I'm also wondering how long it would last with a tank...

    Need help identifying these plants

Hi, i'm starting a planted freshwater tank. While maybe unconventional, i'm growing all these plants from seeds. I have photos of 4 different varieties, but as i'm in China and can't translate, i'm not sure what the scientific/common name for these four types of plants are. I'd appreciate it...
