NEW - Current Satellite LED+ (6,500K/RGB) - Initial Impressions / Lots of Pics

I saw this light in my LFS and HAD to have one afresh playing with it. It's a beautiful light. How did you choose the height to hang your light at?

What can I feed my fish and shrimp?

Alternating pellets with frozen bloodworms (periodically) sounds like a good plan. I'll you with what they eat well and eat sparingly too. Thanks for all the feedback, I feel much more confident now.

What can I feed my fish and shrimp?

It sounds like I'm making too much of a small decision. Thanks for the feedback :)

What can I feed my fish and shrimp?

You have a good point, Thranta. The algae and leftover food can supplement the shrimps pretty well. I might try frozen brine or small amounts of blanched veggies too.

What can I feed my fish and shrimp?

Thanks for your suggestions, LG! I'm going to go with NLS (.5) as a staple. Are there any frozen foods you like more than the others?

Seeking constructive criticism on my planted tank plan

Thanks for the link :) With the tank being so long (36"), how would you all recommend placing the filter intake and outflow? I'd love to avoid having a huge dead spot on one side of the tank.

    Pank's Planted 55g

Haha, we're in the same headspace! Best of luck (not that you'll need it) :)

What can I feed my fish and shrimp?

With my first tank getting started this week, I'm asking my LFS to order Blue Pearl Shrimp and Green Neon Rasboras (Microdevario kobutai). I'm struggling to find consistent information on what to feed the nano rasboras (1" when full grown). Here are examples of what I've found...

You're right. The tests have a disclaimer speaking to that. This is good news (sorry MM) since I'd like slightly lower levels, but still high enough to see decent carpeting on the bottom. All this talk about lighting has me thinking about trimming. The "grasses" seem clear enough. How do you...

Seeking constructive criticism on my planted tank plan

Alright, there might be a snag with the Finnex FugeRay light. I found the PAR data and have made some estimates on what PAR will be at "ground level" on the substrate. Here is the PAR data: The 12gL is about 9.5 inches deep. I've been planning on 2.5" of substrate, which puts me at 7" deep of...

I don't have independent PAR ratings yet. But this can be my project over the weekend. Thanks for the helpful direction, MM.

THANKS for the link (and the props). I'm willing to get into pressurized CO2 so long as I can balance out the light I'm going to use. But until that's set up, Excel will have to suffice - along with PPS. It's comforting to know I won't be making their lives harder with regular-sized doses. The...

Seeking constructive criticism on my planted tank plan

Two tanks definitely sounds like a good idea. I'll feel better knowing all the parts are made to go with one another as well as being under such a long warranty too (with Murphy's Law and all). @Brian, I guess that settles it then :)

So with a difference of $60, it sounds like you've been much happier with the GLA regulator set over the truly DIY HomeDepot "collection." May I ask how quickly you run through 20oz of CO2 with your 12 gallon long?

Seeking constructive criticism on my planted tank plan

So it's the solenoid and regulator that limit whether CO2 is leaving the tank? Would this do the trick: Aquatek Regulator Mini with Integrated Solenoid? My tank is only 12 gallons, so I'm hoping a 20oz or 24oz cylinder will last me a long while in between refills ... question mark EDIT...

Hmm, what about the DIY paintball system didn't you like, Bill? I ask because I've discovered the local sports store will refill 20oz paintball cylinders for $4. That doesn't seem too bad, so long as I can rig a safe system ::eep::

Seeking constructive criticism on my planted tank plan

So I'm hearing overwhelming support for, at minimum, a DIY CO2 rig along with supplemental Excel dosing (and dry fert as well). I can see how the CO2 would be needed. I'll start searching videos and tutorials after I finish my last paper and the last of my grading for this semester (eww). I know...

Seeking constructive criticism on my planted tank plan

EDIT: @Bill, The tank is just too pretty, so I HAD to get it. I actually just got the email saying its been shipped by MarineDepot ::excited:: It really sounds like the pressurized CO2 is the way to go in the long run. I'm a full-time doc student, so the CO2 might have to wait until le Christmas ;)

Seeking constructive criticism on my planted tank plan

Thanks for the kind words and all of your suggestions. These are exactly the things I hoped to hear. It sounds like the Ray2 will be too much light. After looking at the Lumens and Fuge, I'm thinking the Fuge simply because I can get it for around $100 cheaper. I LOVE the slim looks on both...

Seeking constructive criticism on my planted tank plan

I JUST bought the tank for the setup outlined below ::excited:: Is my setup conducive for a beginner's first tank? Are my plant choices and choice of lights conducive to using only liquid carbon (no pressurized CO2)? Will the Excel melt any of my plants (as I've read some plants are prone to...

What other shrimp can I add

Sunkist Shrimp are a beautiful orange, if that would work? However, I can't speak to whether you will run into issues with interbreeding. This site has a nice selection (which you can use for research, at least): http://www.eliteinverts.com/buy-freshwater-shrimp/?sort=priceasc I hope this helps :)

What size filter is good for a 12 gallon tank

Haha, the analogy helps quite a bit. Oddly enough, I'm finding both filters within $5 of one another on Amazon (around $95). I'm hitting up a large fs this afternoon ... I'll update with what I find :)

What size filter is good for a 12 gallon tank

Thanks to both of you! Between both of you and the clerk at my LFS I have a trio of support for the Fluval. That has to mean something :) Is there a chance the 306 has a setting to adjust the flow rate? I'd hate to work the micro-sized fish to death with too much current.
