Make sure your Cory's are nice and big and they should be fine. Made the mistake of buying ones too small for my African tank and they got bullied big time.

If you use a darker substrate his base color will be darker and his coloring will look even more vibrant :)

I find male JDs to have better coloring. But a 40g would not be big enough for a full grown JD as they get bigger than the 5-8" you are interested in. My female convict is very friendly and nicely coloured but has lived with oscars for most of her life and is probably quite sociable for that...

X2 My JD colors up nicely with darker substrate as well. They change color very easily from stress too.

I recommend sand. Oscars are very messy and sand is easier to vacuum. Plus they like to dig in it, a lot.

How big is your Oscar? My large pair is about 10 inches and nothing bothers them. My smaller pair are 5 inches and 7 inches and get bullied by the Dempsey if I don't rearrange the tank often. I've tried convicts with my Dempsey but they fight constantly. It's really trial and error with Oscar...

Well, one of the parents had a few mouthfuls of eggs it appears as I am missing all but a hundred when I woke up this morning. Moved the eggs to their own tank with lots of aeration but I'm worried that they are duds. Should they have hatched by now? How often can I expect them to breed now?

Yeah that's completely normal. Mine was that way for a few days. Now he comes to the top to see me whenever I am near the tank. Be patient because its definitely worth it. A 20 gallon won't last you long. They grow about an inch a month

So far so good! The male is eating already, but mommas too protective yet to leave them alone. I'll post any updates when they happen :)

They are very protective so far. Both taking turns hovering above them and fanning them constantly.

Thanks! I've been researching it and some people recommend to remove the eggs and others recommend to leave them in to be cared for by the parents. Debating on how to proceed. She's still laying eggs, there's gotta be over a thousand in there!

Your red devil is not fighting yet. I hope it works out for you ( in a larger tank ) were just trying to warn you that it's not recommended to stock them this way. The dempseys will probably always fight. Mine will be fine for weeks, then be aggressive for no reason until I rearrange the tank...

Ahh **** multiple threads haha. I love Red Devils but I know someone who has a female in a 180gallon and still can't manage to keep anything with her, not even a full grown Oscar!

Most people use a 40 gallon. Lots of water changes in your future! I've stopped growing mine out now cause nobody will take them. They will literally breed over and over. You'll have a lot of fry eventually. Mine just become snacks for the oscars!

You're probably gonna end up with only a red devil in that tank!
