I tried with sand before and without a good wash the water just wouldnt stay clean. As soon as anything touched it there would be a massive cloud all over the tank. If you can i would empty and wash. And once you think its washed, wash it some more. You also wouldnt want all that sand getting in...

Well yeah its possible its never cycled depending on cleaning the filters or changing the filters. Continual water changes slow the cycle. Like previous poster said it could be a total overload of food or waste. If you have continued problems with ammonia i would really consider re homing and...
