Recently I've been seeing a increased growth of this free algae and it's driving me insane! Nothing has changed so idk where it's coming from but it spreads so quickly. Please help me out.

No its his but hes letting me control how to get rid of it. So ive been turning the lights off more often to see if that would help and i just did a water change on it. Im testing the water tomorrow

He also got a pleco today to help clean up some of the tank.

To be honest its not my tank i dont know the ph levels or nitrate or ammonia or anything. He doesnt clean it or do water changes at all and hes never tried to get rid of it so idk. Yes its a freshwater tank. I told him he needed to take care of it more and actually clean it like i do to mine but...

This is in my fathers tank and it has completely taken over the tank. It used to make the tank look cool but now its just a eye sore. He says its good algae and it wont harm anything but i just want to double check. Ill leave a pic below.

I have a general idea of what i think cycling is but i just wanted to ask just in case. When you cycle a tank you just let the filter run for about 4-8 weeks until the water reaches the proper chemical levels right?
