    Raising Phosphates

Well that went fast. Without GFO on, phosphates shot up to .11 in about 36 hours. I put about 1/2 of what was in the reactor and turned it on again. As for lighting, I have a couple acros high up in the tank that have lightened up quite a bit since getting them in the last month or so. They...

    Raising Phosphates

Thanks all! As for food, I toss Formula 1 Pellets in a couple times a day, as well as feed Marine Cusine, gut-loaded brine or mysis shrimp, depending on what I feel like at that moment. It very well could be lights. I'm running two RapidLED Onyx Fixtures, and yeah, that is a lot of light...

    Raising Phosphates

My corals have looked a bit "blah" (some loss of color, poor PE) for the last week or two. I checked phosphates about a week ago and they were at 0 (Hanna), I've dosed some phyto, red sea reef energy and "reef chili" a few times since, and they are still at 0. Over the short lifetime of the...

    Greg's 44 gallon shallow

3 months at this point, and the tank is doing great! I feed 2/3 times a day, have pods galore and I'm changing 15 gallons of water weekly. Phosphates are at a stable .08 as per a Hanna. I have used filter socks from day one, as I knew I would be overfeeding due to the fish I wanted. This has...

    Greg's 44 gallon shallow

The tank is just over a month old at this point, and here are some general observations. * Diatoms - I had a *very* small bloom a couple of weeks ago. Just a bit on the powerhead and overflow/return pipes. * Phosphates are a bit of a pain. I've been running pretty consistently at 0.08. I...

    Greg's 44 gallon shallow

This is in my 12 gallon office tank, but I like the photo too much to not share. The RBTA split back in Feb and they are both on the same rock. At night, each clown takes residence in one of the nems. When they are all puffed up during the day, they will touch. The female clown will hang out...

Coralife Biocube 14 gal Relocation Questions

I don't think there's an issue with using existing water. In fact, it is probably better. Assuming you did not have the rock out of water for an extended period of time, you could end up with a mini-cycle, but I don't think it'd be too bad. Given that you do have some creatures in the tank...

    Need help/direction badly!!!!!!!!!!

First, don't get discouraged. It will get better. :) What is your lighting schedule? How many hours a day are the lights on? Can you get a bag of ChemiPure Elite in your filter area? Carbon + GFO would help get the phosphates down. In my experience, with a new tank, some just go through a...

    Greg's 44 gallon shallow

I got a couple large acro frags from a friend in town today. They have been growing like mad under T5s in his tank for several years, so I'm starting them on the sand to get used to the LEDs. I also drained my sump today to re-silicone a couple baffles. I didn't get a couple of the...

20 gallon plus 10 gallon sump on second floor.

a 10 gallon sump isn't going to weigh all that much. Assuming you have 10 gallons of water in it, which you wouldn't in a sump, you're at 85 pounds of water. What do you mean by "the second floor"?

    Macro algae

Where are you planning on adding it? Bringing chaeto over from another source you trust can be good, as you'll get an influx of pods/worms/etc. In my experience, it can help with nitrates/phosphates to make the cycle much less severe.

Getting rid of brown star polyps.

Do you know what they are? I think it is ironic, some might keep them, but in a largely SPS tank, I the only softy I want in there is the leather toadstool that was the first coral my wife and I got. She'd kill me if I got rid of it!

Getting rid of brown star polyps.

okay, upon further reading and googling, I don't think these are like GSP (or brown) in this case. Instead of leaving the "carpet" like GSP, it is little roots with a few stalks coming off of them. I hope that makes sense. I pulled the colony out and put epoxy putty on the rock this evening...

Getting rid of brown star polyps.

Also, for what it is worth, I slathered the base rock in gel super glue about a week ago. So this is one weeks worth of growth for them :(

Getting rid of brown star polyps.

Any suggestions on getting rid of these? I'm assuming they are brown star polyps. They came in as hitchhikers on the acro colony below. I keep super gluing over the rock this acro is on, but these buggers keep coming back. They are worse than aptasia!! The acro colony is starting to brown...

    Greg's 44 gallon shallow

They are Lyretails. Since the Anthias are planktivores, I've been feeding the tank 2X a day (sometimes three). Even though it is a complete PIA, I've been running filter socks to help keep the leftovers from rotting out in the sump. The other fish seem to appreciate it as well. They are...

    Greg's 44 gallon shallow

Here's a current FTS. I love how the chromis & anthias are so active in the water column. That is one thing about a larger tank I'm really happy with. Due to the fact that the tank is so young and nutrients in the water are so low, Alk has been a bit high (around 9 or so) which makes for...

    Greg's 44 gallon shallow

Sept 2 I moved the new stand and tank into the house, arranged the rocks, dumped in the sand and let the clouds go away. I did find that a filter sock over a power head in the display as well as the sump really made the clouds go away quickly. I'd rinse them out every few hours. I kept going...

For the cycle, I decided to try something. I started with dry rock. Around August 12-15, I dropped the rock in a new clean 35 gallon Rubber Maid trashcan in my garage with about 20 gallons of new saltwater & I added a mag 5 power head for circulation. I added some flake fish food for the...

I started in the hobby two years ago with a JBJ nanocube 28. A bit over a month ago, I started on an upgrade. Equipment: * 48" x 18" x 12" tall tank (~44 gallons) * 40 breeder sump * 35-40 pounds of dryish rock * ~1/2" to 1" sand bed * Two (2) RapidLED Onyx Fixtures (non-dimmable) * BRS two...

    Overflow spashing in cabinet

I've seen a number of cabinets that look trashed after 6 months to a year due to bubbles in the sump popping water on the walls and doors of the cabinet. With my new tank I started moving things to last week I was getting a crazy amount of water on the floor of the stand (even with a filter...
