What about skimming? Does the LR rubble and the other filtration media you mentioned take care of that? Thanks for the help.

    need help picking an aquarium

The last tank I had was a 20g and while I know it's considered a nano by many, I'm looking for something in the under 10-15 gallon range. because my space is very limited. I could just take my 20g setup with me but it will be too much of a hassle. I'm well aware of the sensitivity of small tanks...

    need help picking an aquarium

Hi, I'm in college right now and I don't have the room or money to invest in a large reef tank. I have saltwater and reef experience and have decided to move into the realm of the nano-reef. As of right now, I'm not sure which kind of aquarium to get. I don't want to merely get a 10 gallon tank...

    Hermit Crab Environment

Whats the simplest environment a hermit crab can live in? I will be taking a hermit crab to class for a week for a biology project and need to know whats the minimum equipment required. I've got all the hardware at home just need to get water. But also, do I need to have sand for the hermit...

    6 weeks later....

Try as hard as you can to remove that. I allowed my tank to reach that level of algae growth and soon I had hair algae all over the place and my tank was barely visible from the outside. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get it under control. Eventually my little cousin tossed a whole...

    1000 gallon dream tank

I'd take a chunk out of a real coral reef and just stick it in my tank.

going down to coast soon, can i bring anything back ???

A local LFS was selling a fair sized octopus that I would estimate to be approx. 5-6" across (the head/body part, not including tentacles) for about $70. Seems to me like a good deal since it wasn't one of those miniature tiny ones and would look awesome in a display species only tank. However...

    I have caught the crab!!

I know what you mean. I temporarily put a foxface in my 20g reef and was dreading the day I'd be forced to take him out because he's so fast and will hide when I enter the room. This sounds REALLY BAD but I found him dead a few days ago in the back of the tank and although it's REALLY SAD, I...

    Quick Powerhead Question

I'd run it through for about 10 minutes in a container with flowing warm/hot water by putting it in the sink and letting the water flow into the container. You should be fine but I like to be extra careful especially with some of the accidents I've had. I haven't used bleach that often so I...

    live rock,no color?

Hmm....doesn't say anything about that on the container. Is anything wrong with Calcium Chloride? Please excuse my ignorance.... Saltz

    PO4 and Calcium

I've just tested out my water and everything is ok except for my P04. The reading is 0.5. As far as I know, it should be 0. How bad is .5 and what should/can I do to bring it down? I don't want to buy a $25 additive (LFS rips people off on everything) and then find out that its useless. I've...

air bubbles on algae?...whats the deal

Oh those bubbles covered in algae are bad? What's wrong with them and how do I get rid of them?

Do I really need a sand bed?

Go with a sand bed. My sand bed has bad algae problems, looks disgusting, and has decreased by an 1" in length (I'm in a recovery phase) but like schoeplein said, the pros outweigh the cons. Just make sure you don't get lazy and have a good clean up crew. Otherwise it will become a pain in the neck.

    live rock,no color?

I use Tropic Marin Bio Calcium (under $15 at my LFS) as an additive for my corals and the rocks. I'm not sure what effect it has on my corals (the first ones I've ever kept) except to say that they are alive and look healthy. My rocks have become so purple that its almost scary. I've been adding...

    Need Help: Tank Revival

Ok, I have encountered major problem. I cannot take the dead foxface out of the tank. He slid in under my biggest piece of rock and the only way to remove it is to remove everything in the tank. Is there any additives I can add to the water that will reduce the impact. There was this solution a...

    Need Help: Tank Revival

UPDATE: found foxface dead 10 min ago in the back of the tank. I assume he's been there about 36 hrs. I'm going to take him out as soon as I eat dinner. Just need to figure out how to because he's behind a heap of LR.
