Bettas are very good jumpers. I just had one pass away because he managed to jump out though the crack between the lid and the filter. It's highly suggested to get something to cover up the top of tank. Even if its just a clear piece of plastic or something you can take off to feed him.

Every betta is different. Some flare so much that they split their fins and some flare very little. If his color is good, he's not sick, he gets along with his tank mates, hes active, and there is no sign that he is getting bullied, I wouldn't be worried. Flaring is generally related with fear...

Thanks Alyxx. Ha I knew they were good jumpers but I had no idea they could fit through holes tinier than the fish itself!! Live and learn though. I'm going home tomorrow and plugging up every single hole in my other tank no matter how small!

Unfortunately, I came back from classes today and found my fish on my desk this afternoon. I quickly put him back in the tank and he swam around for a bit, but when I came back from class tonight he had died :( I have a lid on the tank and Im completely baffled as to how he might have gotten out.

They don't need plants, but they certainly enjoy resting on a nice java moss or Anubia leaf. I would suggest putting at least one or two silk plants in there if you don't want to worry about keeping a plant alive. Just to give them another hiding place and to keep them entertained. I have one...
