I added pure ammonia to my tank to start the cycling process on May 6th, and it measured 4.0 ppm. It's now May 19th and ammonia has dropped to 1.0 ppm but nitrites still aren't showing up, what's going on?

So I tested my tap water after leaving it in a glass for 24 hrs, and the pH turned out to be 8.3 as well. My water goes through a softener, since it's well water. Idk if that would have anything to do with it.

I live outside of the city, so my water is from a well and it goes through a water softener. Can this water be used in my aquariums? I have land hermit crabs and the water doesn't seem to affect them in any way.

I haven't started he cycling process yet. I was thinking of peaceful fish, ones that would get along in a community tank. Not predatory or cichlids. And I'm good with oddballs.

I agree with the dwarf gourami, I have one with a guppy, a Platy and cories.

The tank that I'm putting it in does have fish, and I do not want any snails! That's for sure, or diseases.

Same things happen with my female Mickey Mouse Platy and my powdered blue dwarf gourami! No, there is no sun hitting the tank. I have the lights in for a regular day, and turn them off at night. I changed the position of the light because it was creating algae. Thanks for the help!

You should also take into consideration when the crabs molt, as it doesn't look good when you see the crabs old shell/skin laying around.
