I am creating this system with the intention of making it a community 20g. It will have more than adequate filtration with a HOB filter and a sponge filter as well as well. Also there will be a power head pumping water the the "grow bed" every 15 min.
This tank is over filtered and an...
I use nothing. But I have a breeder box that I use if a fish is being picked on a little too much. I have only seen the birth once, and it was by chance.
It's a 10g with ghost shrimp and snails as well as some of the guppies you see pictured.
They have a very small amount of fry for so many. Normally I leave the fry in the tank with the parents for a week, and then move them to their own grow out tank. Only two of the four females have given...
Has anyone had any issues with an algae or mold that only grows on the silicone?
I don't have pics, but the tank I is 20g and still fish less cycling with a few live plants. There is a dense layer of brown mold or algae growing on only the silicone of the DIY background. Is this normal or natural?
I convinced my wife to get another tank because I made it aquaponics. It requires more effort and customization on your part, but it is pretty cool, and she thought that growing a small herb garden in the house was cool too. :)
Yeah. I didn't think that water quality was my problem.
Is it possible that the fish were sick when I got them? The symptoms are slowly spreading. But I did notice at the LFS they are having an outbreak of fin rot. Which is my most recent problem, after I bought a fish a month ago...
It seems...
Ammonia 0 trite 0 trate <5. Ph 8.1 I don't have a test kit for gh or kh. In fact I'm not sure what they do....
The tank is cycled heavily planted 10g with guppies, shrimp, and assorted snails...
I have had so many problems. It doesn't help that 50% of my stock (added at various times) came...
So I have pretty poor tap water. No nitrates or ammonia. But the ph is 8.2-3. Also I'm pretty sure the alkalinity is high, but I have no way to test it.
I ask cause I am having tank issues. I can't seem to keep the tank healthy for more than a few days. I have had every problem in the book...
Welcome to the thread! This site is very helpful when learning!
If you want a simple but scientifically accurate explanation of the nitrogen cycle search "dr Tim's aquatics: nitrogen cycle." He try's to sell you products that may help the process, but I personally wouldn't buy them (too much...
I totally did this as a kid. Even had a snapping turtle I caught that was about the size of a silver dollar. Other than that, there were a few state fair goldfish. Some of them lived for like 5 years.
I've heard that prime can help reduce nitrates in a tank. It apparently also conditions the water for the fish. If you don't have this, it can't hurt to add a little extra of the conditioner. I use API stress coat. It helps stressed fish by supplying an artificial slime coat which helps their...
Nitrate should never be above 40. And below 20 is much better. You should do a large water change to lower nitrate levels. Do a 50% change, wait an hour, and then another 50%.
Does your tap water have nitrate in it?
Puffers will eat snails. I think any fish could be at risk with the aggressive puffers. However, a clean up crew would have to be made of fish cause puffers eat snails and shrimp.
Custom build all the way. Something to absorb the vibrations underneath. If you used a swivel ball socket mounted to the wall it would absorb some of the motion. I had a friend do this kind of mount with a camera.
If the tank was a sphere, with the socket joint, which locked in place when the...
