    Tangs

Huma-Huma, no worries, I understand your points and completely understand not wanting to see someone end up with a stressed fish by something that could be avoided. It definitely takes a special kind of person to really succeed with an aquarium :)

I have a scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp Keith.

    Tangs

I would like to defend my previous point slightly. A bit of background, my yellow tang was the First fish that I added to my tank. I was naive at the time in thinking that the young man at the LFS would guide me and I did not do any additional research (something that I do regularly now). I have...

    Tangs

I'm still relatively new as well compared to many on this site. The best advice I can give you is just be patient. Don't rush anything. You'll get excited with all the different fish and inverts that you can add but just know its a slow process but worth the wait in the long term success of your...

    Tangs

I've never dealt with petco, I have a big Al's near home who will take back any fish as long as it is healthy and give you a store credit for the fish. As for the cleaner shrimp I have not personally heard of it helping with ich but doesn't mean it's not true. My yellow tang loves the cleaner...

    Tangs

I have a yellow tang in my 46 gallon. I know I will have to put him in a larger tank or get rid of him eventually as they do require typically a 100G for lots of room to swim however my tang has done very well to date and does not seem stressed at all in the smaller tank.

    Grub?

Sniperhank, i got an email saying you responded but it seems when the threads or merged your response disappeared. Do you still believe this is a gorilla crab?

    Grub?

Ok I got him out, still think its a gorilla?

    Grub?

Great thanks! So would you recommend taking him out of the tank then? Do they help the tank in any way?

    Grub?

Hi guys, Any ideas what this could be? This is the first time I've seen him hidden inside the live rock. Should I be removing it or is fish safe?

    My first yellow tang:'(

Did it get stuck within a single piece of live rock or within a nook created by multiple pieces of rock? Perhaps some aquascaping could be in order however it sounds like it was more of a freak accident. The only other suggestion if you didn't already is to drip acclimate the next tang and...

    My first yellow tang:'(

I am by no means an expert and I hope others respond but I also purchased a yellow tang almost 2 weeks ago. It was and still is very skidish and seems to hide in the rocks quite often, especially when I approach the tank. I also noticed it didnt want to eat. Earlier this week I noticed bruising...

    Fin Rot?

Thanks for the response. I am going to my LFS today so i will make sure to pick some up to try and get it eating. As far as the tank mates I have been watching to see if either of the 2 clown fish are picking at him but I haven't noticed. If they were picking at him would he purposely still...

    Fin Rot?

The first picture doesn't really show the fin but its the small fin on the side. This one might give you an idea anyways as you see the one is longer than the other.

    Fin Rot?

Hi all, Bit of background, I recently introduced my first fish a week ago in my 46 gallon tank after cycling the tank for the first time. We introduced 2 clown fish and 1 small yellow tang (at the time I was not aware they required a larger tank). The yellow tang has been very timid since day...

    Newbie waiting for cycle

Ok thanks for the advise. I will definitely wait a few weeks before introducing any more fish. As far as the tang requiring a 100 gallon tank that is really too bad and I really wish my LFS would have told me that ahead of time, especially since I explained the size of tank I had. At least now I...

    Newbie waiting for cycle

So an update to my previous post. I added a single shrimp in a stocking and left it in my tank for 48 hours. When I checked my readings I still had 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite but finally saw a small nitrate level (5-10ppm). Hourah my tank has probably been cycled all this time :) I have no purchased...

And I have been making my own saltwater using instant ocean salt and room temperature tap water. This was the way the LFS suggested or to use the more expensive jugs of saltwater.

    I am using a hydrometer. It's been reading around 1.019 to 1.020.

    Newbie waiting for cycle

Ok thanks for the advise. Ill give that a shot today and will let you know if that gets things started. Is the purpose of the live rock not supposed to add ammonia though? Or was this simply my LFS convincing us to buy rocks at 7$/lbs? Now one thing I failed to mention is that my LFS is about...

    Newbie waiting for cycle

I have not been putting any ammonium in the tank as I was told that that was the purpose of the live rock. I am using API (aquarium pharmaceuticals) salt water tests using water samples taken from midway down the tank and the provided drops.

Hi all, A bit of background. The wife and I purchased a 46 gallon tank off of kijiji. He was originally set up for a saltwater system with coral. The purchase included: - 46 gallon bowes tank - 2 bulb light (sorry, don't know the details besides that its 1 white and 1 blue) - Rena Cal 50W...
