    Aquarium Fish International is Done...

very sad. :bawl: The only two magazines that I really liked are now "going to the dogs"... Both AFI and BirdTalk are ceasing publication. Both offer Dog Fancy instead. Bleah. ccc

HELP with neglected tank ( about 10 years....)

My grandmother had a tank like this. And she got old enough that physically she could not do water changes, only add water. I lived too far away to care for it. So I insisted that she get more filters. It was a 10 gallon and I got her a new HOB and a sponge filter with air pump. This...

    How long does carbon last?

Thanks all! I was hoping that there'd be a formula but I guess it's just not to be. I guess I use carbon because there's some rule in my head that goes like this: "it's a fish tank and you're supposed to use carbon." Maybe should rethink that. I don't have any odors, no meds, no...

    How long does carbon last?

How long does carbon last in a filter? Is there any way to determine if the carbon is exhausted and should be changed? :( I know that many people don't use carbon in their tanks, but for now this is what I'm doing so hang in with me ... I just added new carbon to my 55-gal. I put in a third...

    Absolute Newbie, looking for help

That is incredibly high ammonia! Have you checked your tap water for ammonia? pH is probably just fine for the fish. Don't worry about the pH for now.

    55-gal, stocking advice?

Thanks for the responses! This really helps. I'm getting more and more excited about my new tank. :D:D No. My water has a pH well above 8. Not sure, but something like 8.2-8.4. It is municipal water. Very hard water. There are different types of apple snails. The canas get huge like a...

    55-gal, stocking advice?

Hi! Long time no see! I have a new tank and I'd like advice on how to stock it. Doing a fishless cycle. I have some gravel, decorations and filters from an established tank to seed the colonizing bacteria. I will fill the tank with water over the weekend. I expect that it will take a...

tank size for black ghost knife fish?

What attracts me to the BGK is that they become so friendly and finger tame. A big fish that is hand-fed... Kind of neat to me. But maybe they get really much to big. I'd enjoy a large tank but I don't know if I want a whole river in my living room. 8) Linda and the zoo.

tank size for black ghost knife fish?

I'm looking forward to next Christmas... I was wondering what would be the most appropriate sized tank be for a black ghost knife fish. My LFS said a 30-gallon tank was fine. Foster & Smith say a minimum of 50 gallons. It would be the only fish in the tank. I know bigger and bigger tanks...

    Virtual fish for PC?

I'm interested in getting a virtual fish on my pc. I looked at MOPy (MOPyfish.net) It looks very well done. As you get more points you can add stuff to MOPy's tank like a plant, driftwood, bubbles, etc. However the way you get more points is to print things. On my home PC I don't...

    How to clean used tank?....

I'd recommend vinegar and/or bleach then rinse and rinse and rinse. Fill the tank and use 2-3 times the normal dechlorinator and leave full for a few days to check for leaks. Rinse and rinse again. I did that with a tank I found in the trash house and it seems to be doing fine. HTH. :hat:

Controversy: Dechlor whole tank vs. Dechlor replaced water

Ahhhhhh.... the bottle SAYS to treat the whole tank. I get that. Oh well. I know that prime isn't expensive and there's no harm in putting in extra. I just wanted to know why. I thought it was the sodium thiosulfate ingredient of prime that dealt with the chlorine/chloramine...

Controversy: Dechlor whole tank vs. Dechlor replaced water

Frequently people advise newbies to treat the whole tank volume with dechlor (prime) instead of just the replaced water when they do a partial water change. Help me understand this concept. It seems counter-intuitive.  Situation: 1. I have a 55 gallon tank with 55...

    Bashful Scallop

As I understand, scallops feel secure only underneath, behind and below things. In the front it feels insecure and tries to find shelter. I'd say let the critter stay in the back for the time being. Maybe you'll be able to move it forward in the future. I've read that flame scallops are...

RIP -- last danio glofish died. :-(

Thanks guys. Yes all the glofish were purchased from the same LFS. My water is liquid rock so that might have been too rough on them -- but I always thought that neons were the pansies of the small FW tropicals world.

RIP -- last danio glofish died. :-(

I'm sad to say that my last danio glofish died. He was vertical in the tank and couldn't right himself even to avoid my hand. I decided it was time to put him down (freezing in ice water). Poor little guy. He was so skinny and pale looking. I bought 6 glofish about 8 months ago and...

    funny fish names

I name my goldfish. Redcapped orandas: Fedora & Tam (Tam died) Lionhead: Mango (Mango died) Regular orange oranda: Tilby I named the orandas after different hats because their headgrowths look like the fish is wearing a hat. :hat:  :pepsi:

Tank that had copper in it...

I had black sandblasting sand as a substrate which I think leached some copper. I have no idea if it was a lot of copper or very little and no idea what kind of copper. I'm not absolutely sure there even was copper in the sand either but my snails stopped dying when I got them out. Great...

Tank that had copper in it...

Cleaning a tank that had copper in it..... Background: I have a 20 gallon long tank that I filled with black sandblasting sand and set up as a snail tank. All but one died despite excellent water parameters. I think I know what was wrong... the sandblasting sand probably leached copper into...

    sandblasting sand is bad stuff?

As far as the water parameters for my snail tank, I've kept it at good levels (ammonia=0, nitrite=0, nitrate=5-10, pH=8.0). I changed the water multiple times, I used softened water from the tap, hard water from the outdoor spigot, half & half water. The water couldn't be the problem with...

    sandblasting sand is bad stuff?

I'm confused. I put black sandblasting sand in my snail tank and all of my snails are dying. Someone said maybe it's copper in the sand that is causing the problem. 8O I've read here that sandblasting sand is great for freshwater tanks -- looks cool and very cheap as in this...
