    Aquarium wood

Biofilm is perfectly normal and should cover everything in your tank. Don't worry about it one bit ;D

Diatoms wont go away, 8 months

Fascinating. Are you sure they are diatoms? Do they brush of easy when you swish the water like dust? Bristle nose Plecco or Otocinclus Catfish should take care of it for you if it is diatoms. If they don't touch it then maybe it isn't. Hard to say in the picture but it sure does look like it to...

    Nitrogen Cycle Illustrated with Snatoms

I don't agree with much of this. However, I'm working on giving up arguing in fish forums for my new years resolution. Un subing now. This as gone way off topic.

    Nitrogen Cycle Illustrated with Snatoms

I have done the effect in a planted tank but then had to add nitrates for the plants :D This tank has no plants. I feel that we are stealing the thread away from the OP now. Please feel free to PM me any other questions. I am excited to see if @nirbhao makes new models of other related aquarium...

    Nitrogen Cycle Illustrated with Snatoms

I can do better then that. The crushed pumice (AKA Seachem DeNitrate) is hidden under the gravel. Here is link to the photo bucket with all the pics of the build ;D I tested Nitrates a hour ago. It has been 2 days since I dosed them up to ~10 ppm. They are dropping but not nearly as fast as...

    Nitrogen Cycle Illustrated with Snatoms

I have been working on this too. For years now. I have the denitrification working pretty easy in the tank. FW or SW makes no matter. Maybe Anammox, not sure about how that process works. Unfortunately I have found there are other issues that require we still do WC. Bicarbonate depletion, Metal...

    Nitrogen Cycle Illustrated with Snatoms

That book changed the way I think about FW systems for ever. It's a lot to take in all at once. I re read it from time to time at least in parts.

    Nitrogen Cycle Illustrated with Snatoms

I suspect blue is Nitrogen, White is Hydrogen, and Red is Oxygen.

    UV Light for Fish?

I have been looking into this for the last few days because I found it an interesting questions. I did find what looked like an intro to a study regarding this. The short version: Plants can't use UV light to do photosynthesis. They need Red or Blue Light. Exposing plants to UVB also caused...

    This really upset me

The Speaker in this video still thinks sustainable wild caught is possible and something that should be done. I agree with her. It was never my intention to tell people we should not buy wild caught fish. The speaker just wants to show people what is really happening and wished to make the trade...

    This really upset me

I remember seeing a show on Discovery about that issue. A sample from the most remote part of the ocean had been taken and 6-10 bits of plastic were present. That was years ago. I saw an inventor that made this floating trash can thing. I don't understand how it worked but you drop it in the...

    This really upset me

I just wanted to show you the Cyanide and Blasting are still happening even though distributors insist they are not. I also have, in the past, post articles about the bleaching of the coral reef.

    This really upset me

One positive thing she said was that a Cn test is in development so consumers and distributors can test there fish for Cn after they buy them. Would help make decisions about future acquisitions.

    This really upset me

Don't know if you have seen this? Apparently our SW fish are still being mostly collected by Cyanide and killed by food fisherman blasting. Unreal.

    Black stuff on plants

There are articles around the web about using hydrogen peroxide spot treatments to kill it. I have tested it. Dosing the tank did not seem to work. Spot treating did but the damage to the leaf underneath was already there so I had to remove that leaf anyways. Overdosing knocked my bio filter...

    Black stuff on plants

It's the beginning of black beard algae probably. Very common in planted tanks. Hard to get rid of but there are some things that work. I have never tried it but people say injecting CO2 works well for it. An alternative is to use Excel over the long term. I tried that. I think it helps but not...

OOPS, Stalled my cycle. Easy Fix.

I know quite a bit about it but not easy to type here. It's not consumed by the nitrate and such. What really happens is that the bacteria that turn ammonia into nitrite then nitrate make a lot of acid. That acid needs to be nutralized and that is what KH is/does. Try this...

OOPS, Stalled my cycle. Easy Fix.

Your Welcome. BTW I should mention that water changes would have fixed this but would have probably taken 3x 50 % over a day or 2 if there were fish. 1x 100% seen as how there is not. But it would have only lasted a few days then back in the same boat again.Does not sound like much fun to me.

OOPS, Stalled my cycle. Easy Fix.

Been cycling my new tank for the up coming experiments and I noticed the cycle kind of stalled out on me. Knowing that nitrification consumes alkalinity it occurred to me I might have run the KH into the ground. Only been a few days. Checked my pH and sure enough. 6.4 Yikes. Good thing there is...

    Do I need water conditioner/dechlorinator?

I used to think it was an unnecessary scam. I bought a Hanna Chlorine Checker as well as the Chlorine Strips and did a lot of testing. I now recommend it highly. All of them work fine with Chlorine but I like Prime because it works with ammonia too and is a better deal when you consider how...

    Algae? Fungus?

I have seen some bacterial masses that look somewhat like this when I set up my dirted tank. I did not try to remove them. They went away on there own after a few weeks. I can't say It looks exactly like what you have.

    Sea salt versus marine salt

I use sea salt vs table salt for all food I make now. Much better for you because it has all the electrolytes instead of just sodium and chloride which we eat way too much of. I am getting off topic now :D Unwatching /Poof/
