What you can do is get the acrylic or glass cut to the size you want. Then check out Aqua Medic around the net. They have a pvc "gate" section you can glue to the top of the cut piece you have. The "gate" or screen portion..if you will..will be removable for cleaning. We did similar years ago...
I have the aqua medic 500 model. Beautiful unit and job! It's run off of a rio 50 pump. Two years running. About $50-60 on line..but money well spent! Works as good..if not better than the original DUPLA models - sadly no longer available in USA.

Your PH is most likely your culptrit. Two things - below 7.0 ammonia is in the ammonium form. Less harmful to fish in that state..but not ideal to turn a cycle. The good bacteria you desire multiplies best at 7.0 - ideally 7.2. Raise the PH and you just might find a turn in very short order...
Is your LFS in CT by chance? Curious..saw similar and with a different result about two weeks ago..

I just installed within the past week the "WE" models. Two on a 46 bow. They replaced a quad T5 HO. So far..less pearling but increased growth in that time period. Jury still out.
