Any freshwater fish clubs in or near Jax??

Hi Steve, Yes I am primarily freshwater and planted tank. I live in OP. I'll have to check out your site. starting a salt water tank sounds so complicated although I'm told it's just as easy as freshwater. Also if I bring another tank into this house my husband is going to kill me. I...

    problems with Mollies and sailfins

I wouldn't use the product that removes ammonia , you run the risk of starving your good bacteria. A simple water conditioner that removes chlorine and cloramanes (sp) will work just fine. The only time I recommend using products that remove ammonia are in a hospital tank that is not cycled.

Any freshwater fish clubs in or near Jax??

Hi I'm new to this site although not new to fishkeeping. I've been keeping fish on and off for over 30 years. I'm a moderator on another popular board out there but, I'm looking for some freshwater fish geek friends. My friends and family do not keep fish and they think I'm just a little...

Information on Blackout for white water

I agree that this sounds like a bacterial bloom. A blackout will have no effect on it you just have to let it run it's coarse and it will eventually go away. This is normal for newly set up tanks.

    Thread algae

Do you add iron? Iron is the one thing that I notcie that will trigger the growth of thread algea.

    Crossbreeding livebearers?

Platys and swords are commonly bred. they are both from the genus Xiphophorus. Mollies can not breed with platys or swords they are from the genus Poecilia. Mollies can breed with guppies but this is fairly rare and the off spring are usually sterile. Mollies and guppies really prefer to breed...

Thanks Mr. funktastic, that is an older picture of my tank I have since scaled back on the number of species, less is better and a bit more managable. I do usually take my pictures at night as I have found out they do turn out nicer.

    Tiger Barb color fading

Hi could you provide a little more information about your tank? what size is the tank and what other occupants are in with the barbs? How long has the tank been set up? Have you tested the water for ammonia, nitrItes, nitrAtes and ph? if so what were the results. Anytime you notice change in...

    problems with Mollies and sailfins

^agreed. Even though water changes may slow the cycle the most important part is keeping the fish healthy throught the process. It's a double edged sword.

What does it mean when a fish seems to not be buoyant?

No malachite green and formalin are usually used to treat external parasites. Jungle makes a pellet type food you can crush into smaller bite size pieces. There is also a product called gel tek but I have not had any luck with my fish wanted to eat this stuff. I will also agree that it sounds...

Stringy white fecies, but doesnt come off. Hole in Head?

I've used this that had a bunch of ramshorn snails in it with no ill affect. There is also a product call gel tek for internal parasites and I have not had luck with my fish taking it. Although many people have had success with it. :)

Stringy white fecies, but doesnt come off. Hole in Head?

Jungle makes an anti parasite food, I would recommend using that. Melafix and primafix will do nothing to help this. I personally would not add them to my tank unless I was trying to aid in healing a wound or fins. :)

    Over-aggressive female Molly

Feeding time is when I notice agression most with my mollies. Often times when a female is getting ready to drop fry they become agressive. What is the temp of the tank? higher temps can also have a factor in my opinion.

What does it mean when a fish seems to not be buoyant?

In my experience and research consitpation in not a common problem with livebearers. Although it can't hurt to feed the peas. You said that she has already dropped fry, do you know when that was? Livebearers give birth about once a month. They also store sperm for several months so no need...

    problems with Mollies and sailfins

You also mention that you have soft water. You may need to buffer your water for the mollies as they like hard water. I'll also agree that your tank is still cycling and biospria would be a good choice to use. Other products on the shelves are a big waste of money.

What does it mean when a fish seems to not be buoyant?

Do you have a hospital tank that you can isolate her in? If you isolate her you can keep a better eye on her. Do you add aquarium salt to tank? With the oto in there I'm assuming you don't. I would isolate and add aquarium salt and obsereve her for the time being. Is it possible she is gravid...
