    Cleaning my Eheim 2217

Well, I finally got around to thoroughly cleaning my Eheim 2217 canister; it has been nearly a year and I felt guilty. Still, the flow was never really slow, the water was clear, and the actual cleaning went well. A helpful video on YouTube was useful. As it turned out, I replaced the white pad...

    Thoughts on canister filters

I have an Eheim 2217 on my 55 and it is dead-quiet, efficient, and I have only cleaned it once in 8 months--a process that was far easier than I had been led to believe. The best piece of aquarium equipment I have ever purchased without a doubt!

During an in-fish cycle, how many weekly water changes would you do?

I agree with the above. The last time, I used a 16 oz. bottle of Tetra Safe Start in my 55 and it was completely cycled with no losses in about a week.

    Sand

I used the Ace Hardware pool filter sand and it's been perfect and very clean to begin with. They'll ship it to the store of your choice, cost about $12 bucks. Very nice cream color and the fish--including corys--love it.

Impatient with startup high ammonia no sign of a cycle

I went through this: get a big bottle of Safestart, the 16 oz. worked like a charm in about a week.

Current Satellite LED Plus thoughts or reviews

I have the 48 SAT on a 55 and it has been a fine light for Hornwort, Java Fern and even a sword. I like the moonlight feature at night but generally run the full spectrum six hours a day. Love the remote, and might get the single ramp timer next.

    API freshwater test kit question

I have had the same problem with getting readings; I banged the 2nd nitrate bottle all over the place, shook the tube by a timer, waited 5, and finally scared up something (4ppm), but I question this kit's overall reliability despite all the fans here and elsewhere. I know test strips are dirty...

    Tank stands

I found an old rusty, welded iron stand at a tag sale--must have been from the seventies. Cleaned it up and repainted; very sturdy and looks great.

    Help! Sick fish need assistance

Sorry about your fish problem. I too have had some baffling deaths after a water change. First off, it is my personal opinion that massive water changes of 50% or more or more harmful than helpful; others will disagree, but I have been doing this since the mid 1960s and water condition today is...

Is Water Softener Killing my Fish?

Thanks for the solid advice and time it took to post it. I know from a neighboring forum that you are always generous with your experience and insights. I will do as you suggest and hope to report positively to anyone else in need.

Is Water Softener Killing my Fish?

The PH is 7.2. I don't have a hardness test.

Is Water Softener Killing my Fish?

I've read a lot of conflicting opinions about this. Here in FL, many homes have all-faucet type water softeners, mostly salt-based. I had seven platys doing very well for a month and then had a sudden die-off (water chems were fine per the Master test kit, water always treated with Prime); I...

    Water change %

I've found that 30-35% is about right for most larger (55 or so) established tanks. Every tank is different, but that's what I've done with great success for over 45 years or so. YMMV.

    Pool filter sand

I like the PFS from Ace Hardware; about $12.99 for 50 lbs. They ship it to your nearest store. It's pretty clean, vry light tan, and settles quickly. I don't have Corys yet, but it seems like a nice sand.

    Recommend a filter please?

I also recommend the Eheim 2217. It is my first cannister and is super quiet. Very easy to set up if you watch the "glass cichlids" video on YouTube. Kens Fish has a great price on them.

    Africans and silver dollars?

Shouldn't be a problem. I've had both before. SDs tend to be a bit skittish but aren't easily pushed around. Africans in general are more territorial.

    Glass Covers: Aqueon or Marineland?

Thank you. I will try the Marineland top as it is 1/8 smaller. I will post results

    Glass Covers: Aqueon or Marineland?

I have a tetra braced 55 gallon tank and I will be needing a pair of glass covers to go beneath my Current Satellite LED+ 48. Has anyone tried either the Aqueon aqua-versa or the Marineland? The stated measurement of 23" on the Marineland make me feel it is a better fit than Aqueon's 23 1/8...

    Metal stand limit?

I found an older, welded stand--industrial type, really--for $15 and repainted it; works great. That particular stand looks a bit thin around the legs IMHO.

    Softened soft well water

Same here. I have never had a problem with my softener. I used to bypass it, but it wasn't worth the trouble and the fish are fine with it. If I was keeping Cichlids, ACs, I might think about it or simply add buffers. Mu Angels and tetras are fine with it.

200 watt heater for a 55 about right?

Like the title says. Looking at Aqueon Pro heaters for my 55. I'm thinking 200 should be OK, but the 250 watter is the same price. Which is best? I live in FL and our house temps are usually around 75 most of the year, down to 68 or so in colder months of January and February.

Fluval 406 comparing the eheim 2217 and 2215.

I never heard back about the 405/406 issue so I just ordered an Eheim 2217 from Ken's for $137. Hope I can figure out how to get it up and running!
