    Cleaning my Eheim 2217

Well, I finally got around to thoroughly cleaning my Eheim 2217 canister; it has been nearly a year and I felt guilty. Still, the flow was never really slow, the water was clear, and the actual cleaning went well. A helpful video on YouTube was useful. As it turned out, I replaced the white pad...

Is Water Softener Killing my Fish?

I've read a lot of conflicting opinions about this. Here in FL, many homes have all-faucet type water softeners, mostly salt-based. I had seven platys doing very well for a month and then had a sudden die-off (water chems were fine per the Master test kit, water always treated with Prime); I...

    Glass Covers: Aqueon or Marineland?

I have a tetra braced 55 gallon tank and I will be needing a pair of glass covers to go beneath my Current Satellite LED+ 48. Has anyone tried either the Aqueon aqua-versa or the Marineland? The stated measurement of 23" on the Marineland make me feel it is a better fit than Aqueon's 23 1/8...

200 watt heater for a 55 about right?

Like the title says. Looking at Aqueon Pro heaters for my 55. I'm thinking 200 should be OK, but the 250 watter is the same price. Which is best? I live in FL and our house temps are usually around 75 most of the year, down to 68 or so in colder months of January and February.

    Marineland 360 for a 55? Good idea?

I've been set to order an Eheim Classic 2217 for my new 55 but am somewhat concerned about the difficukty in setting up, priming, and cleaning. From what I've read, the newer Marineland 360 is a more advanced technology and easier to maintain. Any horror stories I should know about? Back in the...

    Calling any Ecco 2236 owners!

I began researching and reading reviews of canister filters for my 55 community tank (unplanted) and love the features of the Eheim Ecco 2236 cannister filter. Has anyone used this with a 55? I know it is rated for up to 80 gal., and some reviews warn of the handle being fragile, low flow, etc...

Some advice on transferring to a new 55?

I'm starting up a new community, unplanted 55, and have an established old 37 with a single surviving Silver Dollar. The 37 has lots of pink granite rocks, lightly dusted with algae and is run by an older Penguin bio-wheel. I will be running an Eheim 2217 on the 55 and wonder if I should pack...

    A Helpful Sand Suggestion

Having pored over innumerable comments regarding the use of sand (pool, play, etc.), I finally picked up this (see below) at Ace Hardware. It is a 20# grit, looks great, cleaned easily, and provided about an inch deep (with some left over) in my 55 gallon tank. I wanted white, but couldn't find...

    What's the Difference?

I've seen the Eheim Ecco series referred to alternately as The Pro, the 2236, something called the Comfort Ecco; all seem rated for 80 gallons but with differing flow rates. Are these just updated model numbers/ I was considering one for my 55, but became wary upon reading about handle falling...

Filter suggestions for a new 55 setup; cannisters?

I realize there are a million possible answers to this age-old question and that the subject of filters is very subjective. However, I have been diligent in my research and have basically come around to several possibilities: Eheim 2215, Eheim 2217, Ecco 2236 or--against my better instincts--an...
