Par38 lamp for 5.5 gallon reef?

I'm trying to upgrade my lighting setup for my 5.5 gallon reef aquarium in order to promote more rapid coral growth. I was curious if a par38 lamp would be ok for such a small tank, or if there are some other options I should look into. Here is the model I'm thinking about purchasing right now...

    Brown star polyp

My yellow star polyp that I bought two days ago has a really nasty brown coloration right now. It was brilliantly yellow at the store, what could have caused this? Is it just acclimating or is something wrong?

    Little white mushroom things

In the water it's completely white, I think the green might just be algae or something. The top part is extremely fragile, to the point where I can't even tell the texture because it just falls apart when I touch it.

    Little white mushroom things

These tiny white mushroom-looking things have started growing in various places around my liverock. Does anybody know what they might be?

    Separating GBR fry from parents

How developed do the fry or eggs of German blue rams have to be before I can separate them from their parents? Today my pair laid a ton of eggs on an amazon sword leaf in my 55 gallon community tank and I want to get the offspring out of there as soon as possible so they don't get eaten by other...

So far yes. Only other thing I'm thinking of adding is a pom pom crab.

    Hair algae

It's a nassarius so I don't think it eats algae. Ill try a few water changes though and see what happens, my last one was two weeks ago.

    Hair algae

I recently had a massive outbreak of hair algae in my 5.5 gallon reef. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it? Photoperiod - 8 hours pH - 8.0 Temp - 77 F Nitrates - 0 ppm Nitrites - 0 ppm Salinity - 1.021 Also the only additional nutrients it would be getting is from the occasional shrimp...

    Can't decide!!!

Unless you plan on growing some extremely light demanding corals I definitely think this is worth checking out http://www.aquatraders.com/LED-Aquarium-Lighting-EVO-Clip-On-Marine-Reef-p/56541.htm

    Can't decide!!!

Yeah it's my first saltwater and it's already turning into an addiction (I'm going to my lfs with a friend tonight to pick out some zoanthids). For filtration I just got the generic top fin Power Filter 10. I didn't want anything too fancy since its only real purpose is to create flow and remove...

    Can't decide!!!

I recently set up a pico reef in my 5.5 gallon and in my opinion it's the perfect size. It's big enough so that you won't run out of room for corals and other inverts too quickly, but is also small enough so that you won't end up spending too much on it. The whole setup for me (including...

    Grey grime & Copepods

Two questions: 1.) I've noticed that there's been an explosion in the population of copepods and amphipods in my 5 gallon reef tank to the point where the water almost looks dirty because of all of them floating around. Are there any pico tank organisms I could add to reduce this? I wasn't sure...

    Nassarius snail feeding

Yes the sand bed is very deep, he burrows in it all the time. And I'll be sure to get those pellets as soon as possible because I'm definitely planning on keeping him.

    Nassarius snail feeding

A single nassarius snail is currently the only inhabitant of my new 5 gallon tank except for 2 coral frags. Do I need to supplement his diet with some extra food or will he just pick off what he needs from my live rock? I have a pretty sizable population of amphipods so I was wondering if those...

    Cycling Problem

The liverock I got was cured and from a mature tank. I also got about 7 lbs of it, is it really possible for it to have cycled that quickly? Because every time I put in something that should produce ammonia it basically just disappears

    Cycling Problem

I've had my 5 gallon cycling with liverock for about 9 days now and have even been adding several chunks of brine shrimp in to get it started, yet for some reason my ammonia hasn't spiked whatsoever. As well as this, both my nitrates and nitrites have remained at zero. At first I even suspected...

    Speeding up cycle process

What are some ways I could speed up the nitrogen cycle in my 5.5 gallon? I already have more than enough liverock and a bed of livesand in place. I've heard of adding flake food or pieces of shrimp to feed the bacteria with the ammonia they create, are methods like these reliable? Not trying to...
