    Advice on Golden Algae Eater?

Hi, can I suggest you get a couple of friends for your oto. They are sociable fish and do much better in groups. 3 should really be the minimum number you keep together. steve

    Baldone's 55 gallon Malawi tank

Thanks all :D . I have: - Metriaclima/Maylandai Estherae Melanochromis Johannii Melanochromis Parallelus (Black & White Auratus) Labidochromis Caeruleus Pseudotropheus Acei Nimbochromis Venustus Haplochromis Obliquidens Pimelodus Pictus All doing very well. steve

    Office Tank

I don't think you need that much time. the only that will comfortably fit in a 5 gallon tank, expecially a hex tank, is a betta. Anything else would, IMO, be done at a squeeze, or without adequate schooling numbers, and be unfair. steve

    Advice on Golden Algae Eater?

Hi, if you are talking about a Chinese Algae Eater (CAE) then you will have to take him back to your LFS anyway because they grow to 1ft long. Way too big for a 29 gallon tank. They are nasty buggers though and will only get worse. As they get older they also pack in their task as an Algae...

    Oscars

Apoligies Matt, I wasn't being pertinent or lambasting the advice. It was just a generalisation that could lead to someone going out and getting the angriest bugger he could find and ending up with a dead fish on his hands. steve

pairs of cichlids in a 29

Hi, a 29 would be ok at a squeeze but a 30 gallon would be better. I know there is only 1 gallon between them but the footprint (surface area) of the tank makes a world of difference. I would avoid convicts completely though. You an't just put a male and female convict in the same tank and...

    Oscars

This is a throw away comment, which IMO is not correct. If you were to put a flowerhorn in with an oscar you would soon end up with a flowerhorn and a dead oscar. IMO, Possible tank mates for your sized tank include Jack Dempsey, Convicts (but one or more of the same sex, as a breeding pair...

Best community fish 4 new tank?

Hi, Am new here and don't want to start treading on the Advisor's toes already (!!) but I would avoid Oto's at this stage. They are a very delicate little fish that require a mature, stable tank to survive. If you put them in your tank now it is quite likely they will die. A bristlenose would...

    Stocking!!

Hi, If you go for a Gourami as suggest above I would avoid the Black Skirt and the Serpae. They are fin nippers and with just one Gourami in the tank he will be a little isolated and take all the flak from the tetras, causing undue stress, which leads to illness. A good alternative to the...

my 55 gallon finally up and running**pictures**

Travis has hit the nail on the head here. Demasoni aggression is most common against conspecifics (similar looking/marked fish). f you avoid tankmates that look like Demasoni you shouldn't have any major problems. There will be the obvious little duels and chases but nothing to get overly...

    Fish to get

if you are set on getting rid of the neons and blackskirts, I would suggest replacing with 2 Peacock Gudgeons/Gobys and a pair of Scarlet Badis Badis/Dario Dario. Great fish and perfect for a tank of that size. steve.

    filter hole help

or use a cutting from a pair of pantyhose (tights over here in the UK!) secured to the inlet will solve the problem. Will not reduce intake volume in anyway and will prevent your fish from being sucked up. It will also prevent large debris such as leaves being sucked up into your filter, which...

    60 gallon cichlid tank?

Hi, This is only the case for African/Malawi cichlids. Overcrowding (within reason) does reduce the aggression because of the ability escape into the crowd. This does not apply with New Worlds though. Nor does the 1 inch per gallon rule. If you were to pack a 60 gallon full with these then...
