I'll answer my own question. While pitting the 3d background into the tank, I broke off a corner. :(
I cut a piece of black sponge the same shape and wedged it in the cavity. The pickup tube is right behind it. I put a sword plant in front of the sponge. You can't see any of it!

Another plus 1 on cannister. Just switched myself.
Not sure where the "more work" for maintaining a cannister comes from. Took me all of 10 minutes to tear it down and flush out the sponges. I switched from a aqueon 75. It was quiet by my cascade 1000 is more quiet. My opinion though.

I bought a 3d background for my new tank with the idea of putting the filter pickup tube behind the background. Will that be ok? Or does the pickup need to be in front? Water will be able to get behind the background since it's not tight against the sides of the tank.
I though about drilling...
What are the ceramic noodles for?

So I am building a new 65g aquarium. I bought my first canister filter. Penn Plax Cascade 1000.
The manual clearly states the filtration works from bottom to top.
But it says the order of the media is carbon in bottom basket and course/fine aponges in the top. Floss in the middle basket.

Thank you everyone for your input. Looks like there is some debate on this topic. I don't want to start any arguments though. But I will take everyone's input. :-) I think what I am going to look at is maybe two smaller rated canisters that combined will provide enough turnover. That gives me a...
Thanks!
My main question was more so around which number to focus on for any filter type.
Flow rate or tank size?
To your comment, the quantity of the water doesn't concern me too much. My goal is to have a tank that at eye level i can see at least some of the fish. That is the only reason I...
So I am shopping planning and saving for a big tank. 75 to 150g so far is some that I liked. I started looking at filter options and am getting confused. Understanding the need to turn the water over 4 times an hour, 150 gallon tank would need a flow rate of 600gph. Correct?
So I am finding...
Thinking more about the python thing. Do you run the water the entire time you are draining/vacuuming the tank? That seems like a huge waste of clean water
Ugg. I have a hard enough time with a 2g bucket! Two back surgeries. Lol.
Plus my intention is to have an average 75g tank but have it sitting on a custom stand that will be about 42" tall so I wouldn't be able to get the bucket that high. Lol
So I currently have a 29g tank and do 50% wc every Saturday via siphon gravel vac.
I have already decided it's not big enough and am looking at bigger than 75g.
Doing a 38g change, 2 buckets at at a time would end my bacj. Not to mention filling it back up 2 gallon at at a time.
I don't have any...
