Yes, czcz, it's Anubias nana petite, cause they're in front of the plasma. And I'm hoping for the Java fern on the left to fill that side and cover most of the rock.
I have fry since a couple of days ago and they are inside a large net in a box shape in front of the Plasma so I can't use it for...
Well, the tank is running again :) I even have fry now.
As you can see, when the plasma screen is off, you can't notice it because I placed a black background at each side.
I'm trying to implement a new project and it's even weirder than this... just wait a while ;)
I already placed some carbon in one of the filters. I also placed a product I found which is said to lower nitrites among other things. I don't put much faith in it though. I'll just continue with the 3-4 water changes per day and tomorrow I will try to move them to bigger containers.
Thanks.
Imagine the scene...
I moved the 840 liters (aprox 200 gallons) tank from the museum into my office. I re-decorated it and the it was the most beautifull tank I've ever had. The fish looked hapier than ever and I left the office at 7 am and took the elevator home (I live 2 floors above my...
I not sure yet about the best option: Let the sunlight in directly through a transparent ceiling or use the cover to make it more diffuse. Does direct sun light pose any problems? I know that in a regular tank it's not a good idea. What will happen in a space this large? It will probably turn...
African cichlids, most likely a malawi community. I'm not interested in large fish or in having a food chain other than the fry that don't make it to adults.
But I'm open to suggestions.
I have 2 possible locations and it's going to depend on the costs, revenues and support I can have in each place. As I said, I'm just at the beginning and I'm not sure I will find all the ressources I need. But I'm extremely persistent :)
One place is here In Madeira and the average...
The tank at the end of the roof flow looks like a good idea. And I also remembered that controlling the amount of water being pumped to the roof may also control the temperature. With lower speeds at night (is a full stop possible?), not only the tank remains more termically isolated but also...
I had to do a 20% water change today. And injected another bottle of bacterias. I didn't want to do a larger water change because I've the feeling that the cycle is nearly complete and there's a large water change coming in a few days because of the move.
The nitrites somehow climbed to around...
I've been reading the thread and trying to adapt a few things to my original idea.
Since I've around 800 sq meters of roof around the tank I guess I can use simple direct sun light. The water will circle in open air on the roof with 5 cm height. The roof will be covered with wavy removable...
On the 13th I will be moving out the tank and I'll do a large water change. After I used the old media NH3 levels dropped slightly to almost zero and NH3 dropped considerably. But if tomorrow the NH3 descent doesn't continue, I'll follow your suggestion and make an immediat water change.
I'm...
I'm also thinking about how to handle deseases. I can't see many alternatives other then trying to prevent them... beyond that, nature just will follow its course. There will be times when hundreds of fish will be wiped out. Can UV's be used in a tank this size?
Yes, it has to be above ground, cause I have a house around it and can't have underground rooms. But as all the tank walls will be interior (the tank will be surrounded by a house), termic isolation will be easier.
It seems that controlling temperature is one of the most important issues here...
Moskitos make nice fish food, let them come :)
Skymir, you're saying the rocks and gravel in the tank would be enough for the nitrifying bacteria? It would be enough to keep the water with good aeration and circulating, while permanently making water changes from a well?
I thought about using...
The difference to a normal 30m x 20m x 2.5 m pool would be mainly the presence of a few acrilic windows and the fact that it would be above the ground. But what about heat control and filtration? Is it feasible to have the water circulating over the outside buiding's roof and let algae grow...
For now it's just an idea...
How can one handle the filtration, aeration, lighting, temperature, Ph, etc of 1.500.000 litres of freshwater?
I'm trying to calculate building and maintenance costs and to understand the technical difficulties.
Meanwhile, in 3 hours, the nitrites level seemed to drop from 0.8 to 0.3. Can this happen this fast???
While I was taking out the test set, I also took their food out of the box where I keep everything near the tank. The way they reacted made it impossible for me to not feed them. They looked...
I'm adding Cycle from Hagen. Since the tank has 840 litres and each bottle it's said to be enough for 1800 litres but doses should be doubled for new setups, I'm using a full botlle.
I also did 2 things: took media from my old tank into one of the the new tank's filters and built a sort of...
I'm experiencing the nitrite spike now. I'm trying not to water change until the middle of next week. The fish show no signs of being much affected. Only the Aulonocara Baenshi looks a bit down but he's not breathing heavily , which I think would be a sympton of nitrites intoxication (he's been...
Thanks BillyZ.
When I first set up the aquarium, I just put a new filter with a product to increase cycling speed. I had another filter running in an older aquarium but I thought that at least the bacterias of the later part of cycle (the ones the convert nitrites into nitrates) would starve in...
Today was one of those mad days where everything is solved on the limit and I did not take very good pictures.
But it worked! It worked better than I expected. Some people were at times confusing the real fish for virtual fish. There was a great deal of movement both from the virtual and the...
And I got milky water... I've been reading about it and it seems that it can be a bacterial or algae bloom. I wonder which of these can happen in 48 hours in a new aquarium. I ran accross town trying to find a phosphate test with no luck. Amonia and nitrites are still very low. Another...
I installed the aquarium yesterday and the fish arrived today... all 21 of them were in good condition. In the few hours I watched them, they were as peacefull as a goldfish aquarium. No aggression at all yet.
To encourage aerobic bacterial grouth I installed a 60 liters/min air pump. That...
