Java Fern Deficiency or Transplant Damage?

I'm no plant expert but have noticed my Java Fern thrives when ignored and prefers no ferts or liquid carbon. I've also noticed tat decay spreads quickly and it's best to trim and remove from the tank ASAP. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Post your Tips and Tricks

The microfiber cloths sold with car wash supplies will clean water spots on the outside of your tank without any cleaners, and leave no streaks. If the spots are really bad, a bit of distilled water on a corner of the cloth helps. ----------------------------------------- Most Seachem...

    Going on vacation

I've done a week several times without problems. Big feed and big water change before leaving, big water change on return. I'd suggest one of those pill containers with days of the week to put food in if you leave it for a friend. You control the portions, and hide the rest. I have an...

    Fake plant to Live Plant

If you're doing a low tech, low-medium light tank, gravel might work fine. I pulled my plastic plants out and have Java fern, Java moss, and anubias growing just fine in my gravel. It's been a couple years and everything is thriving. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    5.5g betta tank mates

I tried moving some red cherry shrimp into a 5G with a beta, and he picked them off in short order. Waiting for plants to establish and provide more cover before I try that again. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Disassembling a Moss Ball?

I was considering just setting a small rock on it to hold it down until it grew into the substrate, maybe moving the rock around with water changes. Would love to find someone who has done this, though, and not waste time and money if it's a bad idea.

    Disassembling a Moss Ball?

Is there a reason people don't cut up moss balls and lay them flat on the substrate? Moss balls seem to do fine in low light, and there aren't a lot of low-light carpet options, especially short and tidy ones, so this is an intriguing idea to me. Do they not not stay flat, or fail to thrive in...

Root Tabs in the Water Column?

Guess the question still applies, will the tabs effect the column? Enough to influence column feeders? Enough to encourage algae at some point. I'm simply not willing to measure and dose liquids daily, so it's the 3-4 month benefit from a tab or nothing.

Root Tabs in the Water Column?

I've just purchased some Seachem root tabs to help push some Java Fern 'windelov' and Java Moss to fill in bare spots in an established 16G. The tank is low tech and I like it that way, once the plants fill in where I removed other items, I don't intend to continue fertilizing. My question is...

    Drilling a tank

I'm curious about the reinforcing rings in your pic. Could you post link where you ordered everything from? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    What would you do differently?

Go slower. Instead of rushing to get fish in, I'd like to take 3 months or so on getting the plants, driftwood, etc. right. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Is chemical filtration necessary?

I always changed carbon filters monthly, until I bought a large piece of driftwood that just wouldn't quit leaching tannins. I tried a bag of Purigen, and it's been about 3 months since, water is clearer, parameters better. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

What's the benefit of keeping shrimp

I have both Amano and Red Cherries in a community tank with rasboras, endlers, pygmy cories, and a single dwarf gourami. As far as I can tell, they all get along. The gourami was the last in and chased everything, including its own reflection, for a month or so, but has since day settled down...

    Less Than Daily Feedings?

I have a community tank that gets fed mostly flakes, occasionally sinking pellets, and once a week an algae wafer. Whatever I feed, it's once a day, in the early evening. I've noticed that when I skip a day, the tank is a bit cleaner and the fish feed as normal. Is once a day feeding considered...

    Bonsai tree as driftwood

    Bonsai tree as driftwood

My other hobby is woodworking... you could set the pitch in a resinous softwood - like "pine"- by air drying it for 6 months or so and then heating to 160 for 2 hours in an oven. You'd of coarse want to be very careful and not leave it unattended. Google kiln drying wood in an oven for more...

5 gal in dorm - stocking suggestions?

Red Cherry Shrimp & a trio of male Endlers or neon tetras would look nice. An anubia is a great choice, maybe a snail to keep it clean. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Water Quality

I use distilled water from my home RO system in my tank, and don't treat with Prime or anything else. I do let the buckets set overnight before changes. I have a very low tech planted tank with no water treatment chemicals, fertilizers, or CO2, and love it. Chrystal clear water, bright...

Low light dense foliage plant suggestions....

Java fern 'Windelov', also called lace type java fern, does this well for me. Shrimp love to hide in it, and it is very easy to grow. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

Tap or RO for fishless cycle

It matters bc a very large tank would be a huge job to fill 100% volume from most RO systems- it might not be worth the effort in that case. In a small to medium size tank, I have and would use all RO. I'm of the less is better approach, and would prefer to add minerals to RO if needed, over...

    Purigen Problems?

The driftwood has been in a month, causing the staining. It was about as mild as you could get and still consider it stained. Tank was slightly dimmer and colors didn't pop, wife didn't even notice until the Purigen was introduced and water went back to sparkling clear as it was before...
