Going from FOWLR to Reef-few questions on lighting etc

Zoas it is! There are many different ones that I really like after researching. So now that is out of the way, what water parameters do I need to be monitoring for these? I have the master test kit, but it does not check things like phosphate, magnesium, hardness etc. (only checks for...

Going from FOWLR to Reef-few questions on lighting etc

Already placed my order for the Current USA Orbit Marine Aquarium LED lighting fixture from amazon, I will just return this one to petsmart. It sounds bad, but that has been my intention all along as I wanted to try out a new light to see if it transformed the tank(it did), and I know petsmart...

Going from FOWLR to Reef-few questions on lighting etc

I've had my current tank set up for almost a year now. Cliff notes: 30 gallon tank protein skimmer two power heads 30 lbs(plus or minus) live rock currently stocked with two snails, a clown fish, and a bangai cardinal(all been in place for about 8 months). We lost our six line when life got...

What is this thing??? Pic enclosed

No idea what this is, thought it was dead or part of the rock etc, but lately at random times it has been opening about 2-4mm and it has a white substance inside. Thanks in advance! Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

Mid fishless cycle, no sign of nitrites.

All fish seem healthy. No white spots on the wrasse tonight. The cardinalfish did for lack of a better word seem to gasp for a little while after feeding tonight, and he would twitch his head a lot like he was choking or something... All levels are still perfect. Thinking of adding 3 more...

Always on the lookout. No other symptoms present though just the specs that I suspect were sand. :) Also, correct me if I'm wrong but the cyst cycle would be longer than 8-10 hours from seeing nothing to seeing 5-10 specs to then seeing none. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

Day two all is well. Was initially scared as the shrimp molted last night and I thought it was it's dead carcus not just it's molted shell, and the wrasse was covered in white specks that fell off as the morning went on. I forgot they bury themselves in sand and thought it was ich! Sent from...

Agreed. Not planning on adding anything else for about 4-6 weeks. Will then add 3 more shrimp and one more fish. 2-3 months after that will add final 2-3 fish. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

The tank has fish! Went to the best lfs I've ever seen, all they do is specialize in marine systems(maintenance, installation, and of course retail store). Talked with the guy there for a while about how I started the tank my setup etc. Left with a small banggai cardinalfish, a small six line...

Yeah never saw nitrite. I'm thinking my cycle was different because I used a combination of live sand, and halfway cured live rock. We will find out tomorrow if the fish live or die, I'm very nervous but also optimistic. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

Saturday is Fish Day Did a 35% change tonight, got my nitrates down to about 10-20ppm(yeah they were really high once I figured out I had to shake the crap out of the bottle), PH is at 8.1ish, Salinity at 1.24, Nitrites zero, ammonia effectively zero(API test kits suck, but the water out of my...

So gents(and ladies), I think my cycle is officially complete. Apparently I hadn't been shaking the nitrate bottle quite enough previously, as when I shook it up for a while tonight and tested my nitrates are well over 20ppm. Ammonia zero and nitrite zero, perfect ph and salinity. I will do...

I know the lo one wouldn't but previously on live aquaria I could have sworn I saw one that would. Now that I'm looking again I can't find it so perhaps I was mistaken... Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

Ok that makes sense. Could I do a hermit crab and one fish at the beginning safely? The fish I plan to stock with are: 1 clownfish 1 wrasse 1 foxface 2 others that we haven't decided on. Aside from that would like a few snails a shrimp and a hermit crab. Any input on order? Sent from...

So add fish first then the cuc? I've always thought it was the opposite? If that's the case would it be ok to add two small fish to the tank at this point? A percula clown and a small wrasse for example? Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

Another powerhead is already on order, definitely want that before fish come in. When you say a nutrient issue, should I be adding something to the tank? Using instant ocean with rodi water and other than live rock a shrimp and some fish food haven't really added anything.... Sent from my...

10 4. Diatoms just showed up about 3 hours ago in force, majority of rocks are now covered in orange. Could have been since I switched the powerhead to airate the water instead of blowing on the rocks. I'm going to grab 2-3 snails and 1 shrimp next weekend, then the first fish a couple weeks...

So no nitrite is okay as long as I get to zero ammonia and am showing nitrate? I do not have strait ammonia would it be safe to say if I can add a pinch of food and not see any spikes over the next 24-48 hrs I am clear to add a shrimp, couple of snails and one small fish? What level should...

Alright guys, really could use some input. Tank is now on its second week, shrimp has total dissolved and disappeared, ammonia dropped to .25 and nitrates at around 5ppm(hard to tell). No sign of nitrite what so ever so far. I bought some fish food and put a healthy pinch in the tank and will...
