Also, are the stock fluval mechanical pads decent? I've never tried making my own. My goal is next to crystal clear water. Would adding a sponge to the intake help or that mainly aid biological filtration?

I can't overdose it? I usually put some in every bucket during a water change and dose the tank with prime just be safe as far as chlorine goes, not sure how fast the neutral reg works for that.

Yes I do have the API master kit and test the water often. Anmonia and nitrites are always at 0 and keep up on water changes so nitrates stay below 15ppm

I do plan on getting a bigger tank within the year. The gouramis aren't too aggressive to each other, I've had them both for a couple months. I also do water changes often to keep the quality up bc I know it is getting pretty stocked. Thanks for the advice
