Yes you can, the only reason I mentioned using it in the top tray is because you said that you were interested in using purigen. The purigen is not that large to fill the top tray.

I just switched from the emperor 400's to the AC110's and they are by far quieter. I will say this though, the emperor's are a much better plastic, I was never worried about bumping and breaking it like with the AC's.

I can only go by what I read, the double bright is 6000k and 1800 lumens, this new one is 7500k and 2640 lumens. Maybe they listen to customers that liked their lights but wanted it to be on a timer. If the T5 HO light on my 120 gallon goes out this is the one I would get.
