    I will try that. Thanks.:)

    Nitrates out of control!!!

I have a sump that water trickles through filter floss into my refugium which hold cheato along with live rock rubble. I use a reef octopus protein skimmer that is rated for a 250gph. I use no other filtration except for the live rock in my DT. I do have a sandbed of about 3 1/2" which my...

    Nitrates out of control!!!

I do run a protein skimmer most of the time. I have been having issues with it overflowing at night at least once a month so in the evening I do unplug it until I can figure out what is causing that issue. I feed my tank about twice a week. I feed rinsed frozen brine or Mysis shrimp. I cut one...

    Nitrates out of control!!!

Yes I have tested the water before adding to my tank. I age my water in a Rubbermaid container a week prior to adding it to my tank and all levels look great. Ammonia, Nitites and Nitrates all come in at 0. pH is always a little low so I add Seachem marine buffer to bring that up. TDS reads...

    Nitrates out of control!!!

I've had my tank up and running now for 6 months. I did initially start the tank with treated tap water and the switched to RO water after initial cycle. The problem is, even with water changes my nitrates have NEVER went down... Params are Ammonia:0, Nitites :0, pH: 8.1, Calcium: 410...

Saltwater fish are amazing. There are some really cool freshwater fish too! Before anyone can give you a proper size it would be nice to know what kind of fish you are interested in. There are a lot of 3" fish. Remember though bigger is easier :) Also there is a huge price difference between...

How do I start to cycle my tank?

That is highly debatable. You can use it as long as you have some reef grade rock with it as mentioned above. It doesn't hold bacteria so you will need something that does. I know my LFS uses some in their tanks as a Ph buffer. Whether it actually works or not I'm not sure.

    Fish ID please.

I know that it is a damsel. I'm just trying to figure out what kind it is.

    Fish ID please.

That is what I thought too, but not a cross' (red honey) damsel. I want to say that it is an adult or close to it as he is about 3" already. I just can't find any pictures that look like him.

    Fish ID please.

My husband went into the LFS and decided to buy a fish for his tank. They told him it was a cross' damsel. He's had it now for a week or so and now and after looking it more closely I am questioning it. I looked up a cross' damselfish and it doesn't really resemble it too much. If anyone could...

    Damsels

Just wanted some opinions on mixing damsels. My husband has a FOWLR tank and right now he has an Adult Red Honey (Cross') damsel in his tank. He has nothing else except for a few snails. He has only had his fish in their for about a week since his tank just finished cycling about 2 weeks ago...

    RO/DI

So I tested the water at work and it has a 1TDS reading. So after reading through all the posts I think I am going to give it a try. Thanks to everyone that posted. It really helped out. :)

    RO/DI

See I 'm not sure either that is why I am questioning it. Would the Ro unit eliminate all of that making pure water? I just want to be safe. I was told that if I hooked up a RO/DI unit at my house I would be going through filter and membranes a lot since I have well water. I really don't want to...

    RO/DI

Ok so I have been trying to get an answer to this question and keep getting mixed results. In my area all we have is well water and my LFS store tested it and said it would be fine to use with saltwater, but I really don't want to go that route. They sell water in their store for $1.00 a gallon...

No Ammonia or Nitrate but high Nitrite

You are welcome and yes please keep me posted because I am still waiting too! My fingers are crossed for the both us us.

No Ammonia or Nitrate but high Nitrite

Not sure if it's right or not, but I was also told not to do any water changes until my cycle was complete. I do know that macroalgae, live rock, and live sand will filter out your nitrates, but so does circulation. Try it if you want the proof...I had to LOL. I took a 5 gallon bucket and filled...

No Ammonia or Nitrate but high Nitrite

Your initial nitrate reading was probably coming from you tap water source, at least that's how it was in my situation. So it was a reading that dropped off as your water circulated. I may be wrong on this and if so hopefully someone will correct me. Hopefully I am back on the right path too...

No Ammonia or Nitrate but high Nitrite

Heath I am following along here because I had the same issue. Did you by chance start your tank with tap water? That is what I did when I first started ( that is what my LFS said was the best) and boy was that a mistake. I started off with really high nitrates added a raw shrimp and thought all...

    Complete newbie need help!!!

Unfortunately not to my knowledge. :( Lights are going to be one of the most expensive things especially if you plan on having corals. I live in the US and these seem to be pretty popular Dimmable LED Aquarium Light 120W Coral Reef Tank White Blue Grow 55x3 Watt | eBay 1 panel is all...

    Complete newbie need help!!!

A good temp IMO should be between 72-78*F. I usually try to keep mine right about 78. When you buy salt there will be directions on the bag/bucket and that is normally a good starting point. You test you salt ( specific gravity) with a hydrometer/refractometer. Refractometers are more...

    Complete newbie need help!!!

Hi and welcome to the salty side :thumb:. I am new to this too, only been at it for about four months now. One thing that I can tell you is to do research! It really does pay off. I feel like that is all I do anymore, but I don't mind. The more you know in the beginning the more successful...

    protein skimmer/sump question.

Research is a great thing. I spend a lot of time researching everything I do. My 4 boys love seeing all the cool pics lol. I love a healthy debate... so now I am searching HOB protein skimmers, while in the meantime I am going to try my in sump one in the refugium while I am cycling the tank...

    protein skimmer/sump question.

It's a 75 gal. It's my 1st attempt at a reef tank. :ermm: It's so exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time. I have been doing tons of research and just when I don't think I can read another article, I research some more. I'm already addicted before I even start :)
