Aquarium supplies and equipment: How long do they last?

I'm coming up on the one year anniversary of my tank, and while there have been a few bumps along the way, I think I finally have a very stable and happy tank. Plus I seem to be getting more and more enjoyment out of it each and every day. :) On to my question. Since my tank is a year old...

I might have a snail problem

Yep, I Googled the Malaysian trumpet snails and its them. I think I'll see what happens over the next couple of weeks. If their population get out of control (ie bottom of tank gets covered) then I'll started removing them. Otherwise, I'd like to keep them around...they're doing a lovely job...

I might have a snail problem

Thanks Zagz! I'm actually very happy to have snails, I think they're kinda neat. My only concern was as you mentioned, as food supply diminishes and they thin out, will they start to rot and ruin my water quality?

I might have a snail problem

About 5 weeks ago, I bought a clump of plants from the LF. When I got home and unwrapped them, I found out I had also got a hitchhiker. The snail was about 3/4 inch and cone shaped. I though to myself 'neat, now I have a snail for my tank' and I put him in. Then he disappeared. I...

    Updated Tank Picture

I'm curious...what kind of fluorescent bulbs do you have in there? They seem to be providing a very nice amount of light. :)

Back from vacation, feeder failed! (Happy ending)

Here's my story...I went home for the holidays, and I was gone for a total of 18 days. Since it was the holidays, most of my friends were also away, so nobody could feed my fish. So, I bought a fish feeder off ebay. This feeder has 14 individual compartments, so you can make sure your fish...

    Where did my nitrates go?

Jchillin...thanks! I'll do a test tomorrow to see where the nitrates are. I think I will also hold off buying any more plants until I have a few more fish in the tank. :D

    Where did my nitrates go?

Thanks Fishyfanatic! The test kit is brand new. It's a liquid kit, and the test for nitrates is the most finicky (ie shake container for 30sec, shake tube for 1min etc). However, I am a chemist so I would like to think I can follow directions. :P

    Where did my nitrates go?

I did a water change after I tested the water. I've been doing a 20% PWC every 5-7 days.

    Where did my nitrates go?

I just tested my tank for the first time in almost two weeks, and I got the following readings: Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 0ppm I have a 15gal with 3 java ferns, 2 cardinal tetras and 2 cherry barbs. My tank has been set up for 6 weeks. I started by dosing with ammonia, then I...

    Help completing my tank

Thanks Ashley...some of the Dwarf Gouramislook really nice. I'll check them out at the lfs and see if I like them. Maybe I'll get another tetra and barb too just to round out their numbers at three each. I hadn't thought about bettas...I thought they were very aggressive? Would bettas be...

    Suggestion for low light plants

Wow, your tanks are amazing Jchillin! That must take a lot of work! If you don't mind me asking, what are the red plants in the picture "skirtedtetra.jpg" and both the foreground and background plants in "idneeded.jpg"? Thanks! :)

    Help completing my tank

Sorry, forgot to mention the tank is a 15gal. I guess another option I have is to increase the number of tetras to get a school instead of getting another type of fish. Hmmm, choices. :)

    Help completing my tank

I've had my tank for over a month now, and things are going great...even after an initial bout of ick. I've being thinking about how I want to finish stocking the tank (15gal), and I would appreciate some suggestions. I have two cardinal tetras and two cherry barbs, and I would like to get one...

    Suggestion for low light plants

I'm getting close to completing my first tank, and I would appreciate some suggestions for low light plants. Right now I have three clumps of Java Fern that seem to be doing very well. I would like to add a background plant, something that is tall and will grow right up to the surface. I was...

Thanks for the advice everyone! I just gave them their evening treat, and they actually swam to the surface! It's about time! :D

    Help: New fish not eating?

Thanks for the help Anne! I fed them today and watched very carefully for 20min afterwards. I was so happy when I saw them eating! :) The fish will eat the flakes only when they are floating in the water column. The problem is they only float for a short time before they settle to the...

    Long fin barb?

I just got back from the LFS, where I saw a really neat fish. They where labelled as long fin barbs, but the clerk didn't know much about them (size, aggression etc). A Google search didn't turn up much either, except for this picture...

    Help: New fish not eating?

The tank had been cycling for two weeks before I got the fish. My current parameters are: pH: 7.8 Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 2 Nitrate: 5 I've been doing a 20% PWC everyday since I got the fish. I realize I probably added fish before the cycle was complete, but with the ammonia levels at zero I...

    Help: New fish not eating?

Is it normal for new fish not to eat? Even after 4 days in the tank? Here's the long story. I bought my first fish last week...two cardinal tetras. They seem relatively happy, swimming around and playing. However, they always stay near the bottom of the tank and are very shy. Whenever I...

First test results...how am I doing?

Alrighty then...I'll do a partial water change to get the ammonia levels down to 5ppm, and then monitor it from there. Thanks for the advice! :) It's also nice to hear that pH shouldn't be a problem. I would like to keep this simple and use as little chems as necessary. The KISS method...

First test results...how am I doing?

My test kit arrived in the mail today so I was able to do my first tests. I have a 15 gal tank that has been cycling for 6 days at 27C. I'm cycling by adding pure ammonia. I've added a total of 1mL (0.2mL/day). Here are my results: pH: 7.8 (same as tap water) Ammonia: >=8ppm Nitrite: 0ppm...

    Ammonia cycling

Thanks for the advice! I'll take the shrimp out, add some heat and keep the ammonia levels around 2ppm. At what point should I stop the ammonia additions?
