    Fish hybridisation

As a natural hybrid it's impossible. Maybe in a petri dish. But even then I think it's not going to work. And even if mitosis starts, the question is whether the embryos will survive.

    A beautiful wild platy species

Thanks, Andy. Well, I do understand that everybody's got their own preferences when it comes to coloration, pattern and bodyshape when buying platies. But it's still such a shame that wild forms are lacking popularity. In the network I'm in, the majority prefer wild forms instead of breeding forms.

    Guppy Breeding Plan

Well, using breeder fish that are of the same strain but obtained from different sources could still be far related to eachother. But that's not that important in your case. inbreeding for the first couple of generations won't result in deformities or bad quality guppies. For all breeding forms...

Can my platy give birth again after just having fry about 4 days ago?

Platy dropping fry with a pause... Yes, they can. Not only because of what Colin has already stated. But it can also happen when one or more eggs have more nutrients in them. When pre-fertilization happens, it means that before an egg is fertilized, the female provides the eggs of nutrients...

    Ordering online

Although I have ordered fish online, I'm not a huge fan of it. I like to see fish personally before purchase.

    Rare livebearers

I've made this video which shows a compilation of wild livebearers. A quick moment of fancy guppies (snakeskin koi guppies) is also present. For they're together in one tank with wild platies (Xiphophorus variatus La laguna). This video shows more than just guppies, mollies, swordtails and...

    Platy w/ long-lasting gravid spot(?)

Technically and theoretically, a platy can give birth every 3-4 weeks. But that doesn't mean that she will always have a steady period of time that she will drop fry. For the female herself will decide if she'll open up 1 or more folds of her fallopian tube to release 1 or more stored sperm...

How long do molly stay pregnant

Most mollies have a gestation period between 6-8 weeks. So, longer than a guppy, platy or even swordtail.

    Male or Female?

Looking at these photos, it looks female. But if it's still young, it could also be a male. Young males tend to look like females. But I'm referring to the finnage of this specimen. And at this moment, I'd say female.

    Tuxedo platy gemini

Btw, just a question out of curiosity... The name Gemini, is that the name of this platy how they call it in your country? For over here it's called a Hawaii platy. Well, not every country has got the same name for a specific strain. That's why I've asked...

    Tuxedo platy gemini

There will always be people who think they know it all. Most of the time, those are people that recently joined the aquatic hobby. If you'd ask to explain this transition from male to female, a 100% chance that they can't explain. What I've noticed, is that there are a lot of people (mostly...

    Tuxedo platy gemini

Well, once the anal fin of a male changes into a gonopodium, the structure also changes with it. And is irreversible. All newborn fry within the Xiphophorus genus are phenotypical female to start with. Genotypical is the other story. With the extra sex chromosome "W" besides X and Y, that "can"...

    Tuxedo platy gemini

Male livebearers won't change into female because an anal fin that has developed into a gonopodium can not be reverted. If there's a sex change, then it's only from female to male.

    Tuxedo platy gemini

    Both platies shown are males.

    Is this a male?

Young males do tend to look like a female... Maybe that's what's going on.

What kind of molly is this and why can't I find more of them?

Well, fingers crossed then... She does have a discus shape in comparison to a normal balloon molly.
