Hot Summers...what is the best for a tropical tank?

Thanks Terry & Madame-X, I'll keep the lights off as an immediate remedy. The ice 'float bag' is a good idea as well as the fans, i'll keep both in mind.

Hot Summers...what is the best for a tropical tank?

U guy's have just come out of a hot summer, what did you do to keep ur tanks temp stable? I keep mine @ 26 deg cel with the heater @ 22 deg cel. Today the tank reached 30 deg b4 I noticed and now I need to know the best method of keeping it at 26 deg cel, with the light on for 8-10hrs a day in...

Newbie here. . . need help ppplleeasssee

Research as much as you can. Get a good book on aquariums (tropical or marine etc). There are a lot of excellent posts here about starting up a new tank....to cycle it then add fish and maintain a healthy environment for them. You need to read how to clean your tank to prevent any spread of...

If you had a 100 gallon tank

Hey SoCal....don't forget to add a large school of cardinal tetras too. I think they're brighter than the neon and have the red stripe all the way along the body. An awesome sight at night with the tank light on and the room lights off :D Also add some driftwood to get some tannin in the water...

If you had a 100 gallon tank

I'm not 100% sure of what fish I would add but with a tank that size I would go for a number of schooling fish. I think that would be awesome to see them at their best, a cloud of colour swimming around. Maybe the set up could be like a cross-section of a river with large pcs of driftwood, river...

Python No Spill Clean and Fill Kits

So you add it directly to the tank....ok, got it. Thanks Alli. Sounds like the python is a time saver and helps prevent a wet mess!!!

Python No Spill Clean and Fill Kits

Quick question....at what point do you add water treatment chemicals? I don't have the need for a python now (using bottled water for w/c on sml tank) but eventually look to have a 55gal tank and like the ease of the python.

Name 10 things we dont know about you

My fav photographer. B&W photography is such an intense representation of the medium, you see the subject for what it is without colours distracting you. Such a raw way to record life :P

Name 10 things we dont know about you

Should have read "have a heap of chooks" Chooks are chickens. I would love a lot of chickens running around freely. A couple of hens, a rooster and little chicks. I once had a hen for 5years and every egg she laid was a double yolker (2 yolks in 1 egg). They were the best tasting eggs too :D...

    Please Help ID Fish.

I am not sure but from your description I think it could be a corydoras and an albino type. Check this link http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/cory-aen.htm You could confirm with your lfs if they sold these types and then search on about.com (their aquarium stuff is pretty good)

    Feeding Fish the Right Way

I have 5 cardinal tetras and a clown loach and when I feed them flakes I crush the flakes into smaller bits (like the size of dried herbs in a jar) so that the fish don't get bloated. They eat the flakes b4 they have absorbed much water so the smaller pcs seem to be a better idea to me :? I do...

    Rinsing Filter in Tank Water?

Cool... don't know how I missed the obvious but now that I understand it my plants will love the extra gunge, I already feed them the tank water 1 p/w from the w/c. Thanks Alli and tkos :D

    Rinsing Filter in Tank Water?

I'm missing something on this topic. If the filter material or floss needs rinsing and you rinse it in the tank water then put the filter back in and switch it on doesn't the debris you just rinsed off the floss now get sucked up and back where it came from - onto the filter floss? I can't get...

Algae in my new tank, what can i do!?

I was getting algae spotting on the acrylic so used an old credit card to carefully scrape it off. I did this just before the weekly water change while the filter was still running so as to suck up the debris. Using the credit card was enough to remove the algae without scratching the acrylic

    Bettas - Peas

I feed my cardinal tetras and clown loach cooked peas as part of their varied diet. I steam the peas for dinner and take a couple out to give to the fish. I pop the fleshy bit out of the skin, mash it with the back of a teaspoon and drop bits into the tank. They all seem to love it. I also...

    our local lfs

I have had similar experiences as posted here but the worst lfs I went to actually offered "self service" fish 8O That's right, like a lolly shop where you can scoop out what you want into a bag then go to the checkout and pay. Besides the possible harm and stress this type of thing could cause...

    Your Cycle Results

Cheers Alli I asked my lfs re bio-spira and the girl hadn't heard of it. I guess that if those in the US are only just getting onto it, it might be a while here in Australia  And I can't imagine what it will cost :? How's the 55gal? btw...funny footer
