I dunno if people already mentioned this.. But you havning a betta splendid for so long is an achievement it self.. Their lifespan is around 2 1/2 years.. My guess is old age, all my betta's went through the same thing. Sent from my iPad using Aquarium Advice

i've kept 1 male and 5 females in the same in a 54 liter tank with no problems

u could also divide the aqurium with a sheet of acrylic glass with some holes in so the male and female and get familiar with each other before u let them swim together
