Black Fin Shark Catfish Info Needed

Someone who's visited the area and can shed light on this just wrote me that the baby sized fish we see here being sold in a LFS when caught by fishermen are fried up en masse and eaten as a finger food or used as bait fish, none are released. The few aquariums, research facilities and aquarists...

Black Fin Shark Catfish Info Needed

Yes it's true that maybe 1% of those wild babies grow up and actually breed (the rest being eaten long before then) but the ones caught by humans won't be among them. If they didn't go into the pet trade they'd go into the human or animal feed consumption market like all the other larger ones...

Freshwater Flounder (or is it really Brackish or Saltwater?)

Regularly our LFS gets in shipments of baby flounders (I believe they are from Florida, either from a fish farm or who knows) they are always kept in the FW section and labeled as freshwater fish. Are these candidates for the brackish aquarium or even saltwater? Or are they truly freshwater? I...

Black Fin Shark Catfish Info Needed

Thanks, just the information I was looking for. Also the brackish catfish list, yes there are very few options. But a brackish mouthbrooding catfish where it's the male that holds the eggs, what a fascinating fish, if only they were selectively bred to create a dwarf variety...

Black Fin Shark Catfish Info Needed

Most of humanity's interaction with this species is eating them, I see no harm with a small percentage of them being kept alive, or do you prefer they all end up being served with rice?

Black Fin Shark Catfish Info Needed

I'm looking for catfish candidates for a brackish aquarium. Here's what I know about the Black Fin Shark Cat so far by talking to people and seeing young ones for sale. First the positives. A school of them looks incredible, especially on a sand substrate and with pieces of coral, they look like...

What do you feed your Figure Eight Puffers?

Thanks everyone for the feeding advice. Snails will not be a problem, I even have a supply of European garden snails available from an area I know never is exposed to pesticide. Every size from smaller than a pea (baby) to jumbo adult (restaurant escargot). Being hermaphrodites they breed faster...

What do you feed your Figure Eight Puffers?

Hi Everyone, well I did it! I just got 3 adorable Figure 8 puffers to add to my brackish aquarium! I received food recommendations from the LFS, but I trust you folks a heck of a lot more, what is the best diet for these guys? Thanks.

Can anyone give me advice on a leaf fish

The juveniles feed on live brine shrimp, the adults eat live gut-loaded fish. From what I hear the temps, water conditions, amount of plants and current have to be just right for them to go after food, even if it is live.

Can anyone give me advice on a leaf fish

Care and Feeding Video of South American Leaf Fish Here is a great video by the California Academy of Sciences on the care and feeding of their captive born South American Leaf Fish colony. Unless you are willing to feed live and can provide the specific environment this species requires, don't...

    Dwarf Mud Crabs Rhithropanopeus harrisii

Hi, does anyone have any experience keeping or breeding these crabs? Do you know a good caresheet or site on them? Is it worth a try? I've always wanted a fully aquatic freshwater species, does this one fit the bill? Thanks.

Can anyone give me advice on a leaf fish

The quick answer is never introduce an adult, similarly shaped fish to a tank with a breeding pair of cichlids, you're asking for trouble. Of course, that's only a general answer, but it will save most hobbyists a lot of grief in the long term.

Can anyone give me advice on a leaf fish

Leaf Fish Mouths Here is a great visual warning for anyone who wants to put a leaf fish of either species into a community tank. Check out these mouths, they are built to powerfully vacuum up any fish that will fit inside of them, which especially in the South American species case are fish...

Can anyone give me advice on a leaf fish

I'm doing this all from memory and I have to go now but I want to start you on the right path. There are 2 species commonly called "leaf fish" in the FRESHWATER hobby. The first is the rarer one. It is the true Leaf fish, from South America. It is an expertly camouflaged, almost completely...

    "Freshwater" puffers True or False

My fish are Dormitator maculatus (I'm mentioning it because scientific names are very helpful especially to foreign readers who have no idea what fish we're talking about!) known variously as the Jade Sleeper Goby, Fat Sleeper, Spotted Sleeper, Striped Sleeper and Storm minnow etc. They get over...

    "Freshwater" puffers True or False

It's quite alright, thanks for the explanation and all the great information! You've convinced me, today I'll rescue a Figure Eight puffer from the LFS and start the conversion process on the aquarium. I was checking out brackish puffer candidate species the other day and of all those available...

    "Freshwater" puffers True or False

Try taking your own advice rivers, I wasn't addressing you, look at the text writer that I was quoting. When did I criticize your puffer method in this thread? Btw, I wouldn't be throwing around comparisons of intelligence or lack thereof to strangers if I was you, you might end up looking a...

That sentence makes absolutely no sense. If "they all have strengths and weakness's" then it should be child's play for you to differentiate them in meaningful descriptions here in a sentence or two for each, nobody is asking you to write a book. The hard task would be to describe the...

    "Freshwater" puffers True or False

You suddenly show up in one of my salinity threads not to inform but in order to discuss your hamster using your phone, and now you come in here, once again not to offer any on-topic information but in order to insult me. You are obviously an unamusing troll with a lot of free time on his hands...

Everyone take a breath and reread the 1st msg in this thread. I wanted salt product recommendations and your reasons for your preferences. You've been the most helpful because you've actually mentioned several product names (one person mentioned one, the other posters didn't name a single one)...

    "Freshwater" puffers True or False

OMG, please read the thread. 1. I myself warned about using table salt. 2. The person I'm quoting OFFERED to go into detail if we wanted him too, I politely said yes, he of course never replied back, LOL! People here love to go on for paragraphs describing screwing in light bulbs and plenty of...
