Gravel substrate, have not been using fertilizer. What would you suggest I use?

2 18000 Kelvin T5's - plants have been growing like weeds up till now, spreading across the tank over the past 3-4 months.

I recently went away for a couple days and returned to find all of my grass dead? The leaves were brown and all the roots as well? Any ideas what could have caused this? I have a 45 gallon planted tank, CO2 system and add Flourish Excel as per directions.
