I did a water change and planted some dwarf hairgrass.

I replaced my aquarium gravel with sand, took out some decorations, and started soaking some new wood pieces in the aquarium bucket to get them ready to put in the tank. I'm transitioning to a more natural looking tank - though I'm not getting rid of my Greek vase! I love that thing too much.

I picked some remaining dead plants out of my filter head, and gazed wistfully at the gravel substrate which I'll be replacing next week. Not looking forward to it.

I've been having unusually high levels of ammonia in my tank lately, so I've been doing 50% water changes daily. I don't know what's causing the high levels...my tank is clean, not many bits when I vacuum the gravel. There's no visible algae or anything. And yet my tank keeps reading 1 or 2 ppm...

I couldn't agree more. I name all my pets, fish included, and I typically name them after characters from books or movies that have similar traits to the pet.

In that case my original suggestion of using a towel or wash cloth might be your best bet.

My suggestion would be to try putting a towel or washcloth underneath it, if possible. If you have a check valve you could even put it on your floor if it's carpeted. As long as no intakes are blocked and the pump doesn't get hot this should be an easy solution.

What kind of air pump do you have? Is the pump loud because it vibrates? I have a Tetra Whisper, the vibrations of which made a real racket against the wood shelf where it was sat. I put a towel underneath it which fixed the problem.
