    Diatoms

Like has been said already, Diatoms feed off silicates. What kind of water are you using? If you are not using RODI, this could be a source of silicates. I had a conch which really helped sift the sandbed and keep it clean.

    Are these numbers normal?

For an 11 day old tank, those numbers are great. It looks like you are mid way through the cycle, with having higher nitrite than ammonia. You should start to see both ammonia, and nitrite drop and nitrate go up. Since you are doing a fish in cycle, and ammonia is toxic to fish, you will...

    Green Hair Algae issue?

Here is how I got rid of my green hair problem. Added a protein skimmer Added a reactor and run GFO turned lights off for 3 days. That cleared mine up, and haven't seen it since. Also my wife wanted a emerald crab, so we got one. He will eat green hair, but not really enough to control it.

Reef tank with normal salt water crystals

I have a 30g reef and 55g reef. I use regular Instant Ocean for both and have corals. Reef crystals are nice because they already have a higher level of cal and mag than the regular does, but mine have been just fine with regular. I have a bottle of cal and mag for when my levels get to low...

    Coral coloration

Cyano can discolor corals as it can grow on them and irritate them, but they will continue to grow. My advice would be through a protein skimmer on there, if you don't have one already. Turn off all lights on tank for 3 days. Thats how I got rid of it, and my corals colored up more than ever.

    Rose Bubble Tip

I have had this rBTA for right over a year now. Tonight I noticed its mouth looking like this. I'm guessing this is not a good thing, and it has never in the past done this. It does however close up for about 2 hours every afternoon, and has done this since day 1 in my tank. Is it dying?

Adding LR After Tank Set UP

You can add it afterward. I would do small amounts over time if doing after though.

    Saltwater mix.

I have used both Red Sea and Instant Ocean with no problems. I use Instant Ocean now just because it is cheaper and so far so good (going on 4 years now without issue.)

    Caleb getting salty!?! No way..

To answer the questions you have. All this is from my experience. You will find very conflicting ideas on forums and in your research. Learn good tank husbandry and the rest is pretty easy IMO. 1. Filter- what's the best to use on a 10g tank? Not diving into sumps.. I have used a HOB...

    How often to feed RBTA?

I feed mine raw shrimp. I get a couple pieces from the meat counter at Kroger and them chop them into small pieces and freeze. My rBTA is on the smaller side so about a pea sized feeding once or twice a week is what I do. Like some others have said, upgrade your light else no amount of...

    Clown/BTA Tann

Keeping multiple BTA's in a 30 would be fine. +1 on Mr_X, keep good water quality and shouldn't have a problem. They will flourish in a take with good water params and under 5 nitrates (0 is better of course). As for the keep them happy and they won't move...can't say that's my experience...

    Bubble Tip Anemone question

My tank has been setup for a year now. 2 weeks ago my wife and I bought 2 BTAs for the tank. They both seem to be fine, but one of them closes up during the day for a couple hours then opens back up. Sometimes it looks like a film is coming out of it while it is closed up. After that it...

    My first saltwater tank

Nano tanks are fun. Just have to make sure to keep up with the maintenance as water prams can get out of hand quickly if you aren't on top of your water changes. I have done 10 and 20gal nanos before, and here is the equipment I recommend getting -15-20lbs of live rock (or base rock and...

    Fish in cycling

Actually doing water changes while the tank is cycling can help and sometimes can speed up the process (not by very much though). From a chemistry standpoint: Oxygen is what the beneficial bacteria thrive on. During the cycle, as your ammonia and nitrite levels go up, oxygen levels get...

    Fish in cycling

This post wasn't intended to say which one is better or a right and wrong way to do cycling. This post was for information on how to correctly do a fish in cycle if you choose to go that route. I've done both and prefer fishless cycling as it's easier and cheaper and less time consuming.
