    Breeding Tank Infection

All: I set up a 10 gallon tank for angel fish fry. The fry were doing well and most were surviving for over a week. During the work day time, a white infection of something occurred, causing the entire tank floor to look like freshly fallen snow. This engulfed the fry, thus no survivors...

    Help - Fish Death

CO2 is only on during peak lighting, thus off at night. No strange behavior, nitrates are high, but a water change today. Nothing abnormal for the tank. CO2 up and running for years, no new fish (except for the fry, which have been eaten), nothing else new. Water change was long over due...

    Help - Fish Death

Water change is long over due. Not sure how long, but long over due. I am changing it this weekend. No new deaths since adding the air pump. Maybe, it is looking up. Rupret.

    Help - Fish Death

No maintenance or additions, well except for the angel fish fry. Plants do well with no fertilizers. I have mild CO2 injection. I know the water change is long over due - been busy at work, assisting with recent tornadoes, and so on. Nothing is standing out to me. I've had aquariums for...

    Help - Fish Death

I agree, ten fish just don't die. pH: 6.8 ammonia: 0.0 nitrite: 0.0 nitrate: 80 phosphate: 0.25 KH: < 3 (I did three drops) GH: 5-10 (drops of five) O2: 5mg/l; 7.6 mg/l at current temp is 100% per test kit (80 degrees) I have pH issues in my area, so 6.8, although not great is not bad (it can...

    Help - Fish Death

Tonight, I had almost 10 fish, Rainbows and Columbian Tetras, die suddenly. My water chemistry is ok and within normal limits, nothing to cause this, except for my O2 level (from a cheap kit, albeit), which was low, low - well below 100%. In the last week, I had angel fish that bred, but the...

    Live plants

Arkansas and Red Wings. I do have Rask and Lucic on my fantasy team. I was very impressed with the Boston fans after Chicago won The Cup last summer. They stayed and cheered loudly for the Hawks. Thought it was great sportsmanship.

    Heater broke help

If goes get too cold. Here is what I did during a two week power outage during the winter, many years ago. I heated up part of the water on the stove (natural gas), then put it back in. it was already treated, so it was just a warming. I did that twice a day on 75 gallon tank and didn't...

    Live plants

Rocky: I tend to bury my roots a little deeper, but you should be ok. If it comes up, just rebury it deeper until it stays. You'll be ok. Hey, where are your from? I'm one of the biggest hockey fans in the South. Don't see too many on here. Who is your team? Rupret.

    Live plants

Most plants I have been able to bury the roots in the gravel/sand. Anubias does well just by burying the roots in the gravel. I have only had gravel substrate, so I haven't used sand. Hope this helps. Rupret.

    Live plants

I'll second the anubias. They are a good lower light plant. Rupret.

    Compact Fluorescent Fixture

All: I just replaced the ballasts on the light and still no luck. the one bulb still isn't working. I was delayed in getting it done; accidentally ordered the wrong ballasts. Any other ideas on the malfunction? Thanks. Rupret.

    Power Compact vs. T-5

Aquarium Advice: i am doing some preliminary research on new light fixtures. I would really like to purchase an LED fixture, but it is cost prohibitive, so I am comparing T-5 lighting. I have a 125 gallon, planted freshwater tank and currently running a fixture with four 96-watt compact...

    Compact Fluorescent Fixture

Thank you very much. i just ordered a pair of ballasts. One set seems to be working well, so I'm hoping I can busy some time with just one pair. Rupret.

    Compact Fluorescent Fixture

I have a Coralife compact fluorescent, 72" lighting fixture, with 4 96 watt compact lamps. One of the lamps went out and I just bought a new set of lamps. When I replaced the burned out lamp, there was a small spark upon lamp start up and not the new lamp does not work. I am hoping I can save...

    pH, Ammonia, and Cycling Issues

I'll keep at it. I do trust the LFS, but always hesitate to use water or such from another source. I am hoping now that my pH seems to be getting stable, it will help encourage the bio-filter. It has been dropping to 6.0 briefly, but the GH Boost has really seemed to do the trick on pH...

    pH, Ammonia, and Cycling Issues

Blert: Thanks. I've cycled tanks before, without bottle bacteria, and have been successful. I think it has been over a month since the major tank crash and it hasn't yet. I just cannot figure out why it is not getting cycled. I'll give it a few more days and then may add the Stability. I...

    pH, Ammonia, and Cycling Issues

After the water change and some GH Boost and CaCO3, the pH is 7.4. The ammonia is 0.5, as expected from a 50% water change. Any thoughts on getting the tank to re-cycle? The ammonia has been here for weeks now, since the major crash. The GH Boost has really helped with the pH. Now, just the...

    Light without glass?

From my research, no, it will not hurt the fish. Some planted tank activists recommend not using a glass top for planted tanks, although I do. But, no, it should harm your fish at all.

    pH, Ammonia, and Cycling Issues

Have added some GH Boost this past week. The pH seems to have stabilized, but still have ammonia. Completing a 50% water change today. May add some GH Boost and a small amount of CACO3, when complete. Last weekend, i did purchase some more fish, for the fish in tank cycling - bought 2 small...

    pH, Ammonia, and Cycling Issues

The GH and KH of the tap water here are both 0 to 1. I am still having some hard times with the pH, which until the last few weeks has been fine. I'll have to pick up some baking soda and will try that this week; I use to use it until I initiated the plants, then changed to CaCO3. Still using...

    pH, Ammonia, and Cycling Issues

Thanks. As of today, my ammonia was 0.0, pH dropped to 6.0. Added some CaCO3. My LFS (a good and qualified LFS) tested the water as well, pH of 6.6, only trace ammonia. They also mentioned that our water is so soft, that it is difficult for any buffer to stabilize the pH. I discussed the...

    Silver Dollar

To second Abrams, I agree, do not put Silver Dollars in a planted tank. I has some Silver Dollars, when I initiated plants, at a high cost. They ate every plant I had. It broke my heart to take them to a fish store - I did get attached to them, but too much expense for lighting, CO2, etc. for...

    pH, Ammonia, and Cycling Issues

I am really low on fish - don't want to add until the chemistry is settled. I have two small-medium angels, one or two black skirt tetras, and one pleco that survived. These are the only fish that I know of that are still present. Thanks for any input. Rupret.

    pH, Ammonia, and Cycling Issues

A few weeks ago, my tank had a major crash. All the bio-filter completely failed and I lost most of my fish in one day. I have been monitoring the chemistry and doing frequent water changes, although the last week I have not due to being out town for work. Ammonia has remained 0.25 or 0.50...
