    Glass top advice

Or buy some glass at the hardware store (Lowes) and have them cut it to size for free. You can even have it cut into multiple sections, one piece for under the light and one to lift off the front for feeding. Take it one step further by running then smoothing a silicone bead across one side of...

    Media question

The fishing line idea sounds amazing, especially if you have a good prefilter. It's questionable about how much water flows through those nylon bags, I'd imagine most of the strong flow goes around them especially when debris starts to clog the mesh.

    Media question

Maybe you could put a sponge over the intake strainer so your media doesn't get too dirty, just cut a nice slit in the sponge filter and slide it up over the strainer pipe. i did this with a powerhead and it made a nice diy mechanical filter.

    Media question

I don't own one but looking at pictures of them it doesn't appear that there's much room in there for anything. It looks like the mechanical filter cartridges have carbon in them, maybe you could cut the top open, dump out the carbon and drop some ceramic rings in there if there's room. That's...

Filter Question For A 55 Gallon

All the pool sand I ever dealt with was 100% sand, if I even thought for a minute that there was something sharp or harmful in it, I would have worn some gloves. Since the sand is sold as a filter medium it's nice and coarse, perfect for an aquarium substrate. The black blasting sand is...

Filter Question For A 55 Gallon

Years ago, I used to service pools and dreaded sucking the sand out of the filters to replace broken pvc laterals (dreaded sand in the pool scenario). There was no glass in the sand, but the filters themselves were made of fiberglass and it would get all over you. Nasty, gummy, suntan oil...

Filter Question For A 55 Gallon

I've been away from the hobby for a while, but I'm gonna guess it depends on how heavy your going to stock this tank. Seems like most things I read now point to filters with good bio media capacity. I had a cascade canister on the 55 I used to own and it was more than enough, that filter lasted...

    lighting question

Thanks, I think I'll try the tape trick. The only reason I thought of putting it on the bulb is I remember a long time ago a company that sold fluorescents with the reflector built into the tube, but that was inside the tube, not on the outside which probably wouldn't have the same effect.

    lighting question

Would you tape it to the top of the bulb or the bottom of the fixture?

    lighting question

I have a 10 gallon tank with java fern, anubias and a few other plants. They do OK but grow very slow. I'm using a cheap single tube t8 fixture with an aqueon full spectrum daylight bulb installed. The fixture does not have a very good reflector built in, it's just white plastic. Could I cut a...

    New tank, is this acceptable.

Fluval U series internal filter looks enticing , 4 filter pads and a media container in what looks like a relatively small footprint. Not sure which size though, U2 or U3?

    New tank, is this acceptable.

Swapped it out today and it looked ok in the store but the bubbles really didn't stand out until I tested the fluval light on it, so I'll hook up the light a little later and give it a hard inspection. I'll be looking for a filter next and I think an internal would work best. The two long sides...

    Aqueon LED hood sizing

I was looking at those too, but didn't see any specs on lumens, color temp, etc. I just came to the conclusion that if the manufacturer didn't make the specs public then the specs probably were not good. Petco has Fluval Aqualife and Plant led fixtures on sale at half price, but that's still...

    New tank, is this acceptable.

Gonna swap it out as soon as I can. I wish the tank had a brace across the top like it does underneath, it seems like that would reduce some stress on the seams. I'm still a little nervous about this brand now but $1 a gallon fits my budget. I picked up the Fluval 36inch Aqualife and Plant LED...

    New tank, is this acceptable.

I went back to the store and looked at the one other 40 that they had in stock and it looked good. Tetras quality control must be non existent to let that pass unless they feel bubbles between the glass are acceptable. The manager said to bring it back if I did not feel comfortable with it and...

    New tank, is this acceptable.

New Tetra tank from Petco $1 a gallon sale with bubbles in silicone. Looks a little scary. Two edges are like this. Is this common in Tetra tanks? I'm a little worried about filling it up.
