Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

I didn't even want to buy the crabs. I traded in my firemouth and catfish from my main tank because it was overstocked. The firemouth was getting bullied and the catfish was being a normal, aggressive catfish. The owner of the LFS told me I had to get the crabs now and couldn't just have a...

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

Wish I had better news/more of an update for you. You can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be updating this thread or a DIY one when I do it. At this point, my slate has arrived. I ordered 20 lbs. Not sure that'll be enough or not. I'll probably be buying a simple 10 gal tank this weekend...

    Semi-planted tank

I am looking to start a semi-planted tank. I have attached an image for you to see kinda roughly what I will be looking to do, and I am looking to do it in a 10 gallon tank. Keeping that in mind, I'd like to get everyone's opinion on what substrate to use and how much I should get. I read...

    Moving an Aquarium advice

This is definitely the way to go. I'd: 1) Drain as much as possible out of the tank (don't forget to fill the 5 gallon buckets with this water to put the fish in) 2) Take the fish out when water level is 50%ish then finish draining to 10-15% would be my guess. It will be heavy if you leave...

    Gourami Question

A co-worker wrote me this email: "I had a gourami once, he was my favorite. Super bright orange, super social and adorable, duh. Then, he started being less social, he wouldn’t come to see me at the front of the tank anymore, he started hanging out in the back behind a plant, lost his color...

Fluval 304 Canister Filter Stopped Working...

I appreciate your help. I believe I have figured it out. I believe the hoses were partially blocked, but the real problem turned out to be that the top wasn't seated properly to the base because one of the sides appears to have been cracked previously and the previous owner sprayed some form of...

Fluval 304 Canister Filter Stopped Working...

I cleaned my fish tank and filter last night and when I went to hook the filter up, it wouldn't work. The filter starts up (electricity), but it won't suck any water in through the intake hose. No water will flow into the filter. I filled the filter up before trying to hook up and primed it a...

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

Do you think the "wood" would rot and crack if my office door was always open? I don't feel like my office would ever become overly humid, but I could be very wrong.

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

That just opened up a can of worms. Lol. I think you are probably right, and I think the materials are similar to what you showed. Unfortunately, I am stuck with that cabinet. They just renovated the office and will not allow me to bring my own stand so I'll have to make due with that cabinet...

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

I honestly couldn't tell you what kind of salt it is (I'm at work). It's probably just aquarium salt. Thanks for mentioning that.

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

The previous owner of the equipment added salt to the water and I have done the same since taking it over, so adding figure 8 puffers shouldn't be a problem in my main tank as it is already brackish water. How many figure 8 puffers should I keep together?

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

Turtle seems like a cool idea on the surface, but, it took an act of God to allow my employer to give the ok for the waterfall tank and the possible addition of fish. Thanks for the mention of the back-heavy tank. I did not think of that at all and that is something to keep in mind. See...

    New Jack Dempsey

I'm new to the hobby and probably not the best source of advice/insights, but, I recently (a week and a half ago) purchased an entire setup (60gal) from someone locally. I haven't actually measure the fish, but I'd say the Dempsey is between 6-7". The other fish that were included were a blood...

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

The pickle jar habitat is a cool idea. I think I thought of something that would allow for plenty of space for fiddler crabs with the sand waterfall. Basically, make the entire back wall of the aquarium a waterfall (or multiple waterfalls) and have a 6" space of land across the entire back and...

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

Would it be enough land/air to just have the top rocky area of the waterfall as the only exposed area? Crabs could climb up and chill there. But, is that enough? I suppose I could design it with a good-sized area up there for them.

Sand waterfalls a problem for fish?

I am thinking about trying my hand at making a sand waterfall in a tank. I'd really like for fish to be in it because I think that would be amazing, but, I don't know if it is harmful to the fish. Obviously it is not normal for there to be a continuously flowing sand waterfall in the water. Will...

    Sand and Bubble Wand Compatibility?

Good to know. Thank you. I am OK with trying it and seeing if it will work or not. I am hoping to not break them by trying. Lol. I suppose I will just bury one and give it a go before burying all of them.

    Sand and Bubble Wand Compatibility?

As I just posted in the introduction forum, I just got a freshwater setup. I'd like to get rid of the black, red, and white gravel and replace with a sand substrate. I just purchased 3x 10" Aqua Mist Add A Stone Aerating Bubble Wand and a 5.5" one for a total of 35.5" to cover my 36" back wall...

    Hello From Baton Rouge, LA

Howdy all. I am excited to have found this forum as it appears to be quite active and full of helpful information and people. I'm new to the hobby and I'm very much looking forward to learning as much as I possibly can. I recently purchased a 60 gallon, hex-front, freshwater aquarium and...
