So a year ago I decided to run my tank solely on air. This means the only electricity I'll ever use on this tank is by air pump excluding the lights which are t8s. My tank is 90 gallons and is filtered by sponge filters. Yups that's it. Now I was spectacle about this idea because the only filtration would be mechanical. But if you think about it, bacteria is everywhere! Of course if you use a canister or hob filter it would be more concentrated In the media. This is my tank pretty much matured
It contains 1 large mouth bass which produces a ton of waste
Note that the HOBs in the background aren't running (I promise)
This tank doesn't need a heater because bass are cold water anyway.
So just wanted to share my success with sponge filters and hope you try them out. If you wanna see some other amazing tanks that just run on air search up cichlidman09 on YouTube. It ain't the prettiest but it's pretty effective and energy efficient.
