I am going to be buying a 40 breeder shortly and am trying to decide on stocking options. As of now I have a 20 long with only a rainbow shark in it. But the rainbow shark is going to be put into the 40 when I get it. I was thinking of getting a school of tiger barbs and black phantom tetras. I would also like it to be a planted tank, but I have no experience with plants. So I need to know what types of plants would be good for these fish. Thank you guys!

Those fish will do fine with any plants, but I would recommend sticking with hardy low-light plants such as anubias, java fern, and cryptocorynes, since you're just starting with plants. You can have a beautiful tank with just those. What kind of lighting is on the 40?
