adding 3rd filter

Hi all
I have a 75 gallon with 2 emperor 400's not planted and want to add a fluval 406 for biological filtration only. My question is how often would i need to do maintaince on the fluval since it will only have bio media in it. I have been told everything from monthly to never. Im sure the hoses will need to be cleaned and the media rinsed at some point but was wondering if any one is doing this and could tell me what they were doing.

I run a fluval 406 as one of the filters in my 220g and use it only for biological filtration. I open it once about every 4 months to see if the sponges need rinsing but never mess with the bio-cubes. But I also have a colony of Malaysian Trumpet Snails that took up residence in there and I rarely even have to clean the sponges anymore.
