Hi, I'm setting up my first planted tank, and was wondering if it is safe or normal to add plants to an already established aquarium with water? What might be the pros and cons to this, or even if it's safe to do this?

Hey there!

Glad you're thinking of using live plants! Just a few questions that will help me give my answers...

- What kind of substrate do you have?
- How big is your tank and how is it stocked?
- What kind of lights do you use?

This will help get the convo started! Thanks and hope to be of some help!!

Its perfectly fine. Just make sure to add plants appropriate to your light level.

Hi! I have a 12 gallon with very well LED lighting. I'm also using fluval stratum and some Flourish chemicals for plant growth.

I'd also like to add that, depending on your source of the plants, you might want to give the plants a good rinse and potentially a quick dip in h2o2 to help reduce the chance of inadvertently adding some hitch hikers to your tank. The exception would be tissue cultured aquatic plants that were grown emersed; and therefore free of pests.

Edit:
Oh, other caveat, don't dip moss in h2o2.
