Air pump and stone as a filter

My filter in my small 19 litre tank has stopped working could I use an air pump and stone with Sponge filter as a new filter ? As a permanent replacement or is it not recommended?

It's perfectly fine. Sponge filters can hold a cycle. Breeders use sponge filters all the time so fry don't get sucked up.

I myself run a sponge on my 2.5g tank.

It will be just fine. I run a sponge on my 2.5g. Breeders and shrimp owners use them all the time because fry won't get sucked up and it can hold a cycle.
