When you do a water change, take all your sponges and bio stuff put it in the old tank water, scrub the plastic of your filter clean. And then just splash all your filter internals ( sponge, bio rocks ) around so some of the gunk will come off then put it all back . What ever you do, do not put sponge and other filter internals into non tank water, if you do you will be going through cycle all over again.
