I was curious last night (I lost power for six hours and set up my 29 gallon out of boredom... I wanted to wait for my python, but the bucket brigade helped eat up some time). Could one use sodium bicarbonate to increase the salinity of water as a cheap alternative to aquarium salt? Just a curiousity. I don't have any saltwater tanks, and I haven't tried it, but I was curious if anyone has.

no, sodium bicarbonate will raise teh carbonate hardness (Kh) and pH...and won't touch salinity.

But it won't hurt the fish? So if I needed harder water and a higher PH, that's how I'd do it huh?
