So I've asked this before and researched it some more. But what if I use sand off the beach? I live in hawaii and its plentiful around here. I know contamination is likely unless it is washed. I went to a house today and he has sand off the north shore of oahu and it looks awesome and his tank is doing great. He also schooled me in the art of live rock gathering which I'm gonna research some more.

I've heard of people using beach sand, but they boiled it before using to kill off anything that might be in there.

The only issue I see is the sand that is around you. The sand around you is most likely ground up lava rock, rather than ground up coral skeletons like other beaches. This type of sand can be loaded with heavy metals, like lead, and do bad things in an enclosed system. That and it will also be magnetic, sticking to your magfloats and such. Bigger pain than it is worth.
