I am moving my 16gal into a 29. The 29 came with a 100W heater, but I would like to use two 50W's for redundancy instead. This will leave me with no spare heater except the 100W that came with the 29. If I need to break out my 10gal for QT/Hospital use will the 100W be ok in there? I wonder if it would create enough heat that when the thermostat shut it down it would continue to warm a small tank for awhile and create temperature swings. thoughts?

My 20 gallon's real volume is maybe 15 gallons even though it's a 20.
I use one 75 watt heater in it. I think you'll be fine...just test it out yourself and see.

you are fine to use a bigger heater in smaller tank. it just turns off and on more often and can cause it to fail sooner.
