I got a new faquacler filter and as usual am trying to look down the road to minimize costs. I read that the biomax should be replced every 3months. Is that necessary, as changing all of it would wipe out the bacteria as well.

I would only change biomedia (and yes I have biomax) if it was falling to pieces with age or hopelessly blocked. At most you may wish to rinse it in tank water now and then. If you do change it, just change half at a time (may need some creative bag work depending on the filter).

What amosf said. :D I have had an AC running for about a year and except for a brief rinse in tank water once in a while to keep the "gotta tinker with it" side of me happy, I do nothing to it. It looks like it will last for many years. Hope this helps.
