BROWN - I come home to BROWN

I have noticed my tank getting darker last week and today I come home and it is dark Brown.... all my rocks and some of my sand, including my pumps and glass... it is every where....

wtf?????


water tested fine, no changes

This is the notorius diatom bloom you where told about. Do you have a clean up crew? Refresh my memory...You using RO/DI water?

I used tap water let it sit and used chemicals

Test your tap water. I`m almost positive this is the cause.

The brown algae is caused from excess nutrients from your cycle just finishing up. As Brenden said this is very common with new tanks and a clean up crew will make quick work of it on the lr and sand. I would clean the glass off by hand though.

Getting an ro/di would help eliminate no3/po4 which are main sources of algae along with lighting. A skimmer is always a good idea to reduce DOC within the water as well.
