can fish die from getting overfed

well i had 2 albino tiger barbs and a pictus catfish die in my 20 gal. My mom put more food than she usually does because wed be out of town for a few days. wen we came back they were dead. the food was those shrimp flavored pellets and flake food
 
If the water quality deteriorated from them being overfed it is conceivable that they died from that. It's not an uncommon scenario when people leave others to feed fish.

If you are going away for two to three days do not worry about the fish getting food. Just hide it. The fish will be fine.

did you test the water? fish are fine for a week some times more. if i do have someone feed my fish when i am gone i make up baggies for each tank for each day. this way they dont over feed.
 
I agree that is was most likely an ammonia spike from the overfeeding that caused the fish death's. Sorry for your loss.
