I added ammonia to my 29 yesterday and accidently put a tad too much in. My ammonia is reading between 4 and 8 ppm. I know that it's recommended between 3 and 5 ppm . If there is too much ammonia can it prevent nitrifying bacteria from forming?

yes, i think it can. between 4 and 8?? that's a big difference, because 4 or 5 would be fine, but 7 and 8 is way too high. i would just do a PWC and try to get it to a solid 4ppm. a 30-40% should do it.

it gets so high it can kill off the bacteria. first thing i would try to figure out if its 4 or 8 big difference.

I think I will do a water change just to be safe then. It is hard to tell sometimes the colors are so close on the test kit.
